With success came higher contracts. Part of the business.
Folks waiting for a guy like Roman Harper to find himself under a 4th d coordinator are kidding themselves. He's a terrible player and should be gone. Vilma can't play anymore. Jenkins missed as many tackles as anybody in the league.
With only a couple changes, we're basically throwing the same garbage out there on defense that we had last year and wishing upon a star that guys like Harper magically grow new legs and the ability to run with TEs and receivers. Please...
Brees better stay healthy...(without a left tackle, because we couldn't afford him)

Last season was a fluke though, and the team went through unprecedented punishments. Yes, some guys need to go. I will not dispute that. I also agree with Lester saying that the draft picks on the defensive side of the ball have been pretty terrible outside of Cam Jordan. That's really unfortunate.
I understand what you guys are saying, but I really think that the dysfunction of last year forced a lot of people to take away from the team's success. I have no doubt that they will be a hell of a lot better than a 7-9 record.

The Saints weren't paying Bushrod anywhere close to what the Bears offered. They had no chance of keeping him anyway. The Bears gave him a terrible contract, that nearly every analyst has graded as an awful move in free agency.
The Saints have had a nack for developing offensive talent, especially on the o-line. Lets just hope that continues.

So you don't like what the Saints org has done with the o-line group the last few years?
Its a helluva bright spot in cap and evaluation. Perhaps the best in the league at finding jems cheap and getting rid of contracts about to explode.
One area where you trust this group.Please.

Also "Will Smith is the perfect 3-4 DE."

I do wish loomis had waited for gabbert or that qb in tampa...whats his name. Then we could be golden with tons of cap money and dreams of a future where our team is not a bag wearing punchline.
One day.
One day.
I wasn't bitching about the money spent on Brees. My point was that any team that ends up with someone close to Brees' capability will be paying the same, or more, on a second contract. Once they reach that level, their cap space will be no better than ours.

Well Jerry Jones kind of threw a monkey wrench in all of that. 1 playoff win get's you top QB money.

I definitely think we'll be better than 7-9. But the only thing fluky about last season was our record.
The defense being a disaster wasn't a fluke. It was just a continuation of what they've been for a long time.
And thats my problem. Not whether we'll win regular season games, because we will. Its that there's a cap on how far we can get in the playoffs with our awful defense, regardless of how great the offense is. 2011 proved that.

No. We had a complete 180 in scheme philosophy that relied on zone coverage and getting pressure from the front 4; none of which fit our personnel. We definitely have some people that need to go, but our players weren't the worst of all time.
There was a thread on SR about some "insider info" on why Spags was fired. Take it with a grain of salt, but one of the posters divulged that Spags really had no clue how to run a defense, and that the players felt like they were just free lancing out there.

2011 proved that the Saints off was as good as I think they will ever be.
2011 proved that if you crap the bed as a def co. on the last possesion costing the team a host of the NFC championship you will be fired.

Always the coordinator's fault, i guess.

They were up and down; mediocre. Not historically bad. Zone and man are two different skill sets. Nnamdi was a top corner in Oakland and a below average one in Philly. He just wasn't a zone guy and neither was our secondary.

Yes. A guess on your part. I'll try to stay away from them.

In 10' our defense was solid minus the playoffs.

No, but they hire one for a reason.
