The Cowboys & the Saints are in the worse shape with the cap '14. Dallas has $145.9M in '14 cap obligations. New Orleans has $139.4M.

Player : Cap #(mill): Dead money: Cap Savings:

Smith, $13.91mill, $2.391 mill, $11.55 mill (later)
Harper, $7.9mill, $1.75mill, $6.15 mill (peace)
Greer, $5.8 mill, $2.65 mill, $3.175 mill (maybe)

Savings $21 mill-ish with Greer = under the cap. Got draft picks and Graham still though. But, easiest ones to free up.

This is all preliminary and can be fixed by cutting players, trades, and restructures. Will Smith, Vilma, possibly Greer and Harper will all be gone.

Can't believe they haven't cut Will Smith

His cap figure was 14.5 mill originally, it's now 8.5 mill. While that is high, his dead money is 6.78 mill. We were locked in for that amount regardless of whether or not he stayed. So if they cut him we would only save $1.75. Don't you think his experience, size ( as a 3-4 DE), and leadership he's at least worth $1.75 even in a backup/rotational role for this season?

I agree. The Saints are a "defense first" team anyway. Go to your strength!

Cutting some defensive players (vilma, harper, maybe greer), possibly parting ways with one of our favorite running backs (pt), and doing a similar extension like Brady's contract to Brees.

I think we're fine...

When ya see these numbers don't wince. We are dealing with success! The more successful the franchise the trickier making it all dance under the cap becomes.

What would feel a lot worse than not having much cap space?

That would having to be a Jaguars fan. As of 4/3 they had $28.3 million in cap space. What are their fans chanting? WTF are you doing!? Spend the friggin money and get a winner! Take your cap space along with your 27 wins in the past 5 years!

Still bummed about the Saints lack of free agent bucks to spend? Okay, try being a Browns fan. They still have a ripe $27.2mil to spend! You do have to cope with having only 23 wins in the past 5 years. But man, you will have some bucks to spend... on someone.

What do the Jags and Browns have in common (in addition to the losing records)?

No franchise QB. If they ever get one, they'll be in cap space hell just like the Saints and the other teams having to pony up to keep their guy.

I do wish loomis had waited for gabbert or that qb in tampa...whats his name.
Then we could be golden with tons of cap money and dreams of a future where our team is not a bag wearing punchline.
One day.
One day.
