What OS would you recommend? I know I can run Linux for free, but I'm not sure how I'd feel about that.

What are you going to be doing?

Windows 8.1. Don't cripple your game choices with Linux.

But I'm just gonna leave it here at 4.2 and that's plenty for me.

Since those FX chips have shtt IPC, higher frequency is what you want to shoot for.

All is fine @ 4.2, but 1-1.5yrs one of my spare rigs had an 8320/7950 then 8320/780 Lightning but the rigs really started to shine around 4.5. They just need that little bump to increase single core IPC which is important for gaming.

Like I said, 4.2 is fine, but just stating from experience.

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor

Might as well get the 4690K.

quote:

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

Yep

quote:

ASRock Z97 EXTREME4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

Good enough. Doesn't matter.

quote:

Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

Did you pick it because it's blue? Otherwise, this is crap RAM, considering that it takes 1.65v to run at a measly 1600 CL9. For a couple of dollars cheaper you can get way better performing RAM. 1866 CL8, 1.5v. The heatspreaders are red, so if you hate that there are some perfectly good 1866 CL9 G.skill modules with black heat spreaders. I'm in the process of updating my guide to discuss speed and timings and the formula to calculate responsiveness.

Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Kingston did some underhanded things with this SSD. They replaced the synchronous NAND with lower performing asynchronous after the reviews/benchmarks came out. Decent selections for a few dollars more, like the Mushkin Chronos.

Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Yep

quote:

MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB TWIN FROZR Video Card

I really don't understand why anyone would opt for the 770 nowadays. It's overpriced and has lower memory bandwidth than the 280x. Hell, you could get a brand new R9-290 for $50 more. Unless you just really really want Borderlands for free...

quote:

Corsair CSM 750W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Good power supply. Can't do much better for that 80+ rating/wattage. However, there are some perfectly good Bronze units for less if you're looking to knock the price down.

AOC e2752Vh 60Hz 27.0" Monitor

Hmm, have you ever done PC gaming on a 27" 1080p screen? The screen is a bit large for 1080p. Big pixels, very noticeable aliasing. I'd shrink the screen size or go 1440p (but if you go 1440p, I wouldn't recommend the 770).

Also, didn't see a case.

Here's the build with just small revisions:
LINK

Here's what I'd do if left completely up to me:
LINK

But it comes out $100 more than your original build because of the 1440p. It would be the best extra $100 you ever spend. (and obviously, to save money you could go with an 8350 or 8320, but I'd recommend just sticking with the Intel platform and coughing up the extra if possible).

EDIT: fixed the broken links.

I ended up with some extra parts now that I'm finished with my new build. I'm gonna post them on reddit to sell but I figured I'd see if anyone here wants them first.

I would go for a 285 if you want that performance range.

Only reason to use a 770 now is if you own a Shield or plan to stream gaming to other nVidia PCs. None you will be doing and I recommend using Steam Streaming anyway.

I still haven't gotten around to reading more about the 285's performance. I remember the specs on paper making it seem worse than the 280x, but it's different GPUs. I guess I'll go read now.

But the fact that even Green Team Captain over here recommends an AMD card over that 770 is pretty affirming.
