That R9 290 is a great price right now. $399 for basically a downclocked 290x

The 290 performs well from the 2 reviews i read but they said it is obnoxiously loud. I wouldn't get a reference model unless I was putting it under water. The performance though almost makes the 290x irrelevant at this point. It's very strange.

They must have upped the fan target from the defaults. [H] reviewed the card, and said the fan wasn't an issue at the 47% cap. No additional performance was gained by raising the fan, either.
I noticed some people who had been previous GTX 480 owners complaining about the 290's noise. I loled.

I didn't own any GF-100-400(480) but owned a GF-110-325(570) and GF-114(560Ti). Yeah both cards became really hot because they required a crap ton voltage like these new R9 cards do. AMD got the naming correct, they are VOLCANIC ISLANDS!

Yeah at that price point but not really. You are buying into a full Hawaii chip which is faster, almost 300 more shader cores. Just like the GK110-300(780) and GK110-400(Titan) when launched. You always pay a premium for the top tier and early adaption.
I can't seem to ever catch a 290X in stock and not paying +$250 over retail like I did for Titans on eBay. If the 290 stays in stock, I probably will go that route for Hawaii.

What really sucks is that Maxwell's GM100-400 chip is being pushed back from Q1 2014 to Q3/Q4 2014 due to manufacturing and process issues @ 20nm.

Every year they say COD is a bust. Then people calm down and continue to play it.

Just read some reviews of the 290 finally. Wow.
However, I want to see the results in more next gen games over the next 6 months. The performance being so close to the 290x just indicates that the games tested (or perhaps all games to date) aren't optimized well enough for the extra processors/texture units. As time goes on, I think there will be more of a disparity in performance. Or maybe not. Hardware has been ahead of software for a long time.

I agree. Bf4 is really the only next Gen game we have right now and even that is handicapped by previous Gen ports.
