I've never used a ubuntu install as a method of file recovery before but I'll start trying it.
Stout, how'd you go about it? Old hdd on a cradle or back in the laptop? Ubuntu on a flash drive?

Random question, how important are graphics to you for gaming? Is that why you game on pc or do you just love the platform in general?

Ubuntu on a flash drive. It creates a bootable flash drive so it gives you the option to try it before installing it. In total it takes about 5-10minutes

I ran Ubuntu for about a moth off just an external HDD on a laptop with a bad harddrive. It's pretty awesome.

the games i have spent the most time on, by far, are games specifically suited to a keyboard and mouse (simcity, total war, civ, etc)

I have seen that before, never tried it. (Ive used Ubuntu just not on in that application) Allows access to the files on the failing hdd as well huh? pretty neat little trick.

Yeah, it allows you to access the files in the on all the other drives that are attached. I don't know can be used for total file recovery from a dead/dying drive but I did just seemingly do it. Yeah I discovered that I could use it to play music files from my windows partition when dual booting it with win7. After that I've used it several times to get stuff off. My dads laptop wouldn't boot at all and it allowed me to get his stuff.

Holy frick! This monitor is fricking crazy. The colors are all bright and vibrant. BF3 is soooooooooooo smooth at 120fps. Dear god, my old monitor isn't even worthy of sitting next to it.

Have you calibrated the monitor yet?

Picture calibration is something I need to learn more about. I'm never happy with my picture. I can usually get the brightness and contrast working well but the colors are usually more challenging. I also tweak them too much instead of leaving them.

I hate that. It washes out all the blacks which I am picky about. I spent forever while playing metro adjusting my screen because it's such a dark game. My monitor doesn't handle blacks well and my plasma tv spoiled me with that.

Would anyone be interested in my cooler master quickfire rapid with mx blues for $40 locally or $50 shipped?

I think I may just stick with my new keyboard
