UCLA MBB HC gig

Still a top ten job? I heard a great interview with pearl talking about it. He said a guy like Shaka would be a bad fit there. He said they should go get an NBA pedigree guy that will embrace the one and done recruits and make it Kentucky west. He feels like a guy like smart or brad Edwards would be too devoted to their specific type of system and that wouldn't work in LA.
I agree with him on smart. One and dones and elite recruits won't want to press and trap and only play 20 min game. With the lakers and clippers in town you have to get elite recruits to sell tickets.
So who does UCLA get as their HC? Supposedly the harrick tree is dead by their admin because of the ncaa stuff so no romar or cam dollar. Do they go for an NCAA HC? Look for an NBA type? Go with a retread?
Another interesting factor is housing is so expensive in the area that Asst coaches have to live 30-40 min away. That Is rumored to be part of the problem with howland's grip on the program, his staff just wasn't hands on enough with the kids because they werent around enough and they let the lunatics run the asylum.

LoRo and Cameron Dollar don't deserve the job anyway. They need a West Coast recruiting maven. Sean Miller would be a guy if they're willing to go in conference.
I don't know enough about what NBA coaches are out there to throw those kinds of names out.

For the right person it is top 5, maybe top 3.

There has been a lot of talk about Gottfried, despite the disappointing season at NC State, so I don't think the Harrick staff is completely off-limits.
I'd hate to see UCLA become Kentucky West because I hate the idea of Kentucky in the first place. But I do think that if any school could make it work, it would be UCLA. But I doubt their administration will be down for that.
I would have gone for Shaka. His system is a more extreme version of what Pitino did, especially in the UK days. And he never had trouble getting elite players to buy in. But it seems like Smart is going to stay in Richmond again. I wonder if he will leave for anything besides Duke or UNC.
If Smart says no, I would go look at Brad Stevens, even though I don't think he would be as good a fit. Both of those guys seem like sure things. Just like Bill Self was about 10-12 years ago.
I wonder if Gregg Marshall will interview with them while he is out there this weekend. If they go the NBA route, how about Brian Shaw?

Would this be a greater "fall up" than Lane Kiffin?

I don't see them doing that. UCLA basketball seems to love preaching the Wooden BS too much for that.

It sounds like they have zeroed in on Brad Stevens and may be in the contract negotiation stage already. Apparently ESPN reported that, but then pulled it very quickly.

Not quite, but it would be close.
Gottfried has at least accomplished something in his life.

Who is the best assistant coach in college basketball?
How many points is a three point shot worth?
How many halves are in a college basketball game?
Yeah, yeah, I know it was at Georgia, but I bet the same thing happened at UCLA. But after Harrick, I doubt it will happen again in Pasadena.

If smart is bad, Stevens would have to be considered worse.
I just don't see the appeal of UCLA. Maybe 20 years ago...but not now.

Those were questions on a final exam given by Jim Harrick Jr. for a full credit class at Georgia. I believe 8 of the 15 students in the class were basketball players.
That was worth as many credits as Intro Econ, Biology, etc.

Some local media people in L.A. are touting the head coach at Florida Gulf Coast, Andy Enfield, as a prime candidate for the UCLA job.
I think he'd be a good hire.

UCLA is still the #1 job in college. A system coach is 100% the right move. Oh and I highly doubt Stevens is leaving Butler he's the best coach in college basketball and with them moving to the new Big East there is nothing stopping him from making them the "new Duke"

You don't see the appeal? It's been 20 years? Huh? What?
Didnt howland go to 3 straight final 4s?

Wooden was a system coach. Read his book, and he describes it in detail. He was so organized and detail oriented that the first practice of the season included lessons in how to wear socks and properly fit shoes to avoid blisters.
UCLA for the past few seasons has looked like the five best players tossed on the floor together instead of a team. They have had no role players. They need fewer stars and more role players. A coach who recognizes this and selects his players well from the available talent in California will be pretty successful at UCLA. He won't come close to Wooden's success, but he should be able to make the NCAA every year and go deep frequently.
