re: Rush Limbaugh on gay marriage: “This issue is lost”

quote:

As for the government staying out of the so called marriage business, that would be hard to do. Taxes, benefits, inheritances, obligations of parents, social security, and pension issues all revolve around marriage and the fact the govt. recognized that a married couple was a union (or a corporation of sorts).

The government by law has defined marriage in order to foster an orderly society.

All of which can be satisfied with civil unions.

quote:

Not any two people living in the same dwelling can say they are married. You have to make it official (legal) and there are different ways to do that. You don't need a church or a religious institution to make it happen.

Exactly, which is another reason for civil unions.

quote:

Religious opposition to calling gay unions gay marriages is there because many religious people do not consider what they have (a marriage between a man and a woman) the same as two people of the same sex, and for that reason they get upset as if the government and other forces are taking something special from them or that society is somehow diluting what they have(had).

If you consider how government and the agnostics in our country have slowly but surely changed things to fit their idea of how society should be; you can understand why people who believe marriage is something special and not just two people living together. Look how they took prayer out of schools, made abortion on the law of the land, made religious symbols offensive, and now this and anyone can understand why people are upset.

Again which suggests based on separation of church and state, government should not be involved with marriages since roughly 80% of marriages are associated with religion.

quote:

But like some here have posted, what have "we" lost? Really nothing, it's just that changes like this will certainly lead to other changes which will cost us something somehow. They always do.

Government sanctioning same sex marriage creates a conflict between freedom of religion and civil rights since religious institutions will not perform these marriages which no doubt will challenged by gay rights groups.

So you believe that marriage is a religious institution? It was a religious institution way before the government got involved in it.

Those who support gay marriage AND claim to be Christian are hypocrites.

What about Christians who don't support gay marriage personally but don't care what people do with their lives that doesn't affect them?

Seriously you would love it in Iran. They run their government as a theocracy.

I'm talking about denying those benefits you're referencing as "rights" to everyone outside of couples recognized as married. That is not the way "rights customarily work, is it?

The benefits we're talking about only make sense or apply with couples, no? And they apply when those couples apply for and are granted those benefits by the state (like a marriage license and the subsequent benefits of being married).

And really the entire discussion about the term "rights" is sort of a waste of time and beside the point.

And there's the end game, to stick it to the churches.

I agree that this is part of the end game for liberal progressives in general. Religion still remains as a large stumbling block to molding our nation into the liberal progressive image.

THIS! I was once pro-ghey marriage.

But it's been pretty clear to me that many in the liberal and ghey-activist community don't actually give two squirts about the issue.

They just see it as an opportunity to stick it to the religious folks they have such hatred for. I can't support that agenda. So I no longer support ghey marriage.

I don't see how being bigoted against the religious is any better than being bigoted against gheys. Same sin. Different direction.

I assure you, if gay marriage is legalized, next up on their bitch fit list is getting married in churches.

Most people don't really care because it doesn't affect them.

Which is also why you shouldn't care.

Under what plausible theory is a gay couple going to force a Catholic church, or any church, to marry them. Please . . . don't punt and bring up elimination of the tax exempt status. If it's withstood scrutiny this long, it's going to withstand gay marriage. Churches decline to marry couples all the time.

Under the plausible theory that a combination of highly disruptive Sunday morning protests and anti-First Amendment Chick-fil-a type maneuvers would serve that purpose quite well.

Kind of narrows the reason why a church may decline. Do you not think there will be discrimination suits?

Why has this not happened in the nine states where it's legal.

I doubt the church will cave in to a bunch of a-holes like that. If it does, then shame on it.

Under the same plausible theory that they will have to pay for abortifacients.

You're talking about a group of people that feel threatened by a chicken restaurant.

All it takes is one gay couple to throw a fit about being denied marriage in a church. And it'll be all over the news, about how hateful the church is.
