So now military service is a determinate for office, or actions taken in office?

It pretty much was in the post-WWII era. The last president who actually served in harm's way was Bush 41. Reagan sat out WWII stateside.

Politicians who have not served and as a matter of fact actively took steps to avoid serving should be very cautious when sending other people's children off to war.

I think the documentary did a good job presenting Cheney for what he is and what he will ultimately be remembered for, one of the 2-3 best political power players in the last 100 years. He knew instinctively how to move the levers of power in DC.

Politicians who have served should be very cautious when sending other people's children off to war as well. The latter group, having seen war first hand, is more likely to respect that obligation.

Easy-peasey, just count back 8 months and a week before that...

(Clue, it's February 14, 1979)

This reminds me of a Norman Schwarzkopf quote: "the most pacifist people I know are people who have been to war two or three times".

What gives us a right to interfere at all?

The same right Ahmanutjob has to interfere in Argo movie distribution and messaging. The same right Norwegians have in political manipulations of US politics through awarding liberal presidents Nobel Prizes. The same right Islamists have to interfere with burning the Koran in the US. Everyone attempts to interfere with everyone. The only question is as to degree of success. It's how the world works.

Always good to have skin in the game, when making pronouncements or policy that affects others in powerful ways.

Cheney is the consumate diplomat; gravitas, bargain from strength...get a deal. Comparing Cheney to the current VP, is...well... ...analgous to the current political mess we're in.

The world is changing fast. Time for a new crop of visionary leaders to step up and unite as opposed to dividing. The old guard is becoming obsolete.

NC, I make a SERIOUS distinction between dropping bombs on people and occupying their capitol, or even putting the economic squeeze on them on the one hand, and suing some entertainer in a 'world court' that has no jurisdiction here (or whatever court), or someone giving one of our citizens a million dollars and a medal, on the other.

'Telling' someone and forcing someone are two different levels of 'interference', imv.

And that's a fair distinction.

However, the same distinction applies in reverse when those players stick their thumb in Uncle Sam's eye.

Richie Rich has a ton of cool toys in a big house. If you play nice, he'll invite you over to share his stuff. If you ignore him, he'll ignore you. If you poke him in the eye, he'll hire a couple of thugs to mess you up.

The US has done wonderful and extraordinarily under-appreciated things for the third world and ME. No country in the history of the world has been as powerful and altruistic. So while I strongly share your noninterventionalist sentiments, I do not share the Islamist apologist bent some here espouse.

Uh, yeah, exactly...

The people that inhabit the region we call the cradle of civilization resent how we've interfered in their internal affairs. It's not really complicated. The problem is that we feel that we're entitled to their resources. So instead of spending our blood and treasure developing our own resources, we've spent it in interfering in the interal affairs of nations in the cradle of civilization in order to get their resources.

I'm not apologizing for Islam, I think it's an unfortunate fool's errand that has duped a lot of souls - like most other religions.

I don't give a shite about any 'appreciation' or not.

And Chinesebandit, apparently we're about the same age and if you supported that stupid arse war and sat home bbqing in the back yard - that makes you just like W a chick hawk. For those younger, getting in a national guard in those days was more difficult than getting in the Augusta National.

I sat in a computer simulation laboratory designing air-to-ground missiles for 10 to 14 hours a day. The Defense Dept thought the work I was doing was worth a Top Secret clearance.

Of course I could have resigned that job and volunteered for the military. I didn't do that. I obeyed the law of the land and kept my draft status up to date at all times. If I had been drafted, I would have gladly reported for duty - unlike many of your left wing heroes who fled to canada, burning their draft cards in big arse protests.

Screw you - you don't know anything about my personal life. You wouldn't understand if you did. Mock all you want - that is your highest achievement as far as I can tell.

That is an easy problem for them to solve. They can just refuse to sell them to us. They can sit on their fricking oil and drink it if that is what they want.

No - they NEED us to buy their damned oil when we could, if we wanted to, just go and TAKE it and tell them to jump into the Red Sea.

Screw the 'feelings' of those worthless duplicious bastards.

quote:

And just who in hell is responsible for us NOT developing our own resources??

I agree with you - we need to rid ourselves of all these stupid DEMOCRATS from Obama on down who are holding our future hostage - requiring us to either pull our culture back to 18th century standards or else deal with those ungrateful bastards who are all too willing and eager to sell us their precious resources.
