Yet, widening 4 miles of flat interstate costs $140 million in a Louisiana?

Did you know that with the federal gov't involved, $12B spent on roads today is almost an equal waste of money?

The problem is that you need to spend a Trillion in the same time period to bring high speed rail into reality but the money simply wasn't available.

Additionally, most of these projects are so small they are ridiculous. If you built high speed rail between NYC and Florida, NO / Texas, and Chicago you would see an immediate return on investment.

Then build a high speed rail from Cali to Texas to meet up with an NO / NYC line... you would make mad money.

Good post.

one ticket purchased is a return on investment. how long would it take to pay off the loans and make a profit?

to answer: a long fricking time

The freight operators that own the track make more of a profit with freight than passender, so they focus on frieght. In order to run any passenger service, you have to lease track from the freight operator - with the stipulation that you always yield to frieght. You can't run a passenger service efficiently under those terms. See: Amtrak.

It appears it isn't even being built. You could argue that if you put a bullet train loop in SE Louisiana it would be ridden, but to do it you have to build it. They could have already built it if they would have just took the money they already spent and gave it to a company and said build the damn train!

talking about building the rail and then burning $12b is better than actually building the rail

I watched a modern marvels episode on super highways. They were widening I 10 in houston. They said it cost about a $1 million/ mile. However, on tv it looked alot better planned than br. They said bad planning that construction has to work around makes the cost sky rocket. Since i'm posting about br roads whoever designed the on ramp to the new bridge was a dumbass.

See Oboes stimulus package of a few years back. What was the outcome of that fiasco?

The one place where Amtrak makes money is the northeast corridor.

They own their own tracks from Washington to Boston.

Yep, keep going...

That 12 billion could have been put to much better use improving that corridor where people actually ride the train

Most economic studies found it to be successful.

Connecting cities that don't have comprehensive mass transportation already with high speed lines will always be a fail idea. It works in the northeast because every stop along the northeast corridor has access to regional rail to get you home. Even up here... the Acela is technically "high speed rail" but it doesn't compare at all to systems that have existed in Europe and Asia for decades. Americans simply don't want to live at the population densities that other nations already live at, especially not in the south.

they didn't just widen the interstate. they have demolished and rebuilt 6 lanes along with several bridges and overpasses.

eta: under very heavy traffic

Let's make the wild assumption that the average riders time is $1/min. So you need to save 800 million minutes for it to make sense. Assume payback over ten years, 20 minutes round trip... 400,000 riders per a year? I know my assumptions may be off but I don't think it was that bad of an investment.

Passenger train service declined over the years for a reason. Lack of demand(riders).

There are exceptions sure(NE for example), but nationwide people do not want to ride trains. If they did there would be private train service now.

Like the boat theory. Before you buy a boat you should take out $1000 from the bank, and find the nearest toilet. Flush the $1000. If you cringe... Don't buy a boat. You can't afford it. You may have lost $1000 but its a lot less than you would have had you bought the boat! If you do t cringe, you're probably a good candidate to become a boat owner. What does b-o-a-t stand for? Bust out another thousand!

I seriously doubt this what our spendaholic government is doing with its study
