I went fishing yesterday with my wifes uncle on Toledo. Well, we tried to go. Once we left the marina the motor wouldn't run very smooth. It kept reving up and idling down at full throttle and wanted to die when idling. I'm thinkinig the float in the carb is probably sticking. Its a 40hp yamaha, I'm not sure of year model. When we squeezed the priming bulb on the tank we could see gas dripping from the front of the cowel. Any ideas?

Sounds like a float or the jets are in bad order. Carb kit would be my first path forward.

you need to clean your high jet.

Pull the drain plugs on bottom of carbs..
pump bubble to flush gas through..
This might be all you need to do I would try before disassembling

I believe you can access the high speed jet through drain plug on bottom of bowl...

A lot of times just pulling plug in Flushing some gas through it with the bubble will fix the problem

Some good advice here, but what kind of gas is in the tank? If old 10% ethanol then change that first if it were me.

Just got ours back from the shop 90 yamaha...one of the 3 carbs was off pretty bad...we couldn't get over 2K when the boat was under a load.

Between the 10% ethanol and lack of time to hit the water this has become a yearly visit for us.

pull the bowl drains and spray the hell out of them through the bowl with carb cleaner, change your fuel completely dont add fresh gas to old gas, take you fuel hose apart drain every bit of gas out of it fuel bulb included. you might have to pull the carbs just pull them apart and clean them with carb cleaners.
Yamahas HATE old fuel and ETANOL trust me that is what is wrong with it.

In need of a carb rebuild/clean. I just did a Suszuki 9.9hp. Older motor,1994 that has been sitting up the last 8-10 years. The float was gumed up to the bottom of the bowl along with the jets pluged.

Oh, this motor has less then 20 running hours on it and is like new. Was my FIL boat/motor.

Forgot one other thing. Check all gas fittings. If any air can be sucked in, it will do the same thing. Costed me $79 for 4 new fitting for that Suszuki.
