re: Video Card deals

You've got two choices. Use the tv until you can afford the 1440 and new gpu. Or suck it up and buy a 1080 monitor and upgrade your CPU mobo first. You aren't going to get much resale out of the 1080 monitor so it would be the least cost effective but most practical solution. Tbh it sounds like you are really reaching to get to 1440 and it's not the right time financially.

Yea the switch to 1440 sounds like it is going to be a big change for you right now, a lot more than originally thought.

re: Video Card deals

I think I may go ahead and order the 1440 monoprice monitor and use a HDMI to DVI-D adapter so that I can use my current card for the time being then upgrading to a stout enough card when there is a good deal. Thoughts?

This upgrade just got more expensive than I thought. And this is pre-mobo/proc upgrade

I keep looking at upgrading GPU and I know I also need to upgrade my CPU (still using a 1st gen i5 ) which will require a MOBO upgrade as well. I keep coming to the same conclusion and therefore putting it off.

I think I'm going to wait until the GTX700 line launches and upgrade then. Right now I don't have any issues running the games I like to play. I might have to use lower settings, but I'm okay with that for now.

7970 at $345 after Mail in rebate. Amazing price, the cheapest a 7970 has been in quite a while.

Also comes with crysis 3 and bioshock infinite (I sold my set for $60 about a week ago)

HDMI doesn't support 1440p

Current HDMI can support up to 4K rez (2160p), but only at 24Hz. The problem is that Monoprice monitor (and the other Koreans like the Catleap, Shimian etc), only support a dual-link DVI connection.

HDMI to DVI connectors available are only compatible with DVI Single Link. This will limit the output to 1920x1200. Graphic cards use HDMI type A connectors, which are electrically compatible with single link DVI-D, not dual link DVI-D.

A Display Port to DVI adapter should work however.

my 5750 has been fine for me but does not have dvi-d which the lower price 1440 needs.

you sure about that? Which specific model 5750 do you have? And note, DVI-D isn't what you need, you need Dual-Link DVI.

The 5750 standard specs from AMD LINK show "Integrated dual-link DVI output with HDCP"

Disclaimer: I have one of those Monoprice 1440p monitors paired with a GTX460, but I don't do much gaming.

re: Video Card deals

I have the sapphire 5750. It does have display port so maybe a display port adaptor like you mentioned? I said I am fine with the 5750 only until I decide which direction I want to go with the VC's. currently I am dead in the water with no monitor.

Is the monoprice monitor worth it?

your card has dual-link DVI. No adapter needed. Just a cable like this

The display is gorgeous. I have it next to an HP L2335, which is also an IPS panel, but the 27" definitely looks better next to the HP. I love the amount of pixels. My work setup has dual 19" LCDs that combined have less pixels than the one 27". I picked up it in January when the 20% coupon was active so it only cost me $328 shipped.

The stand however leaves a lot to be desired. It wobbles a bit, and even if you choose to use a separate mount, there's part of the built-in mount that is not removable so it'll look goofy. See the pic. The base is removable but the glass stem is not.

re: Video Card deals

Thanks for all the expertise. I tend to wait a few years before my upgrades and thus I lose all knowledge of the latest trends in connections etc. I was happy when my old monitor was working at 1680x1050 playing world of tanks etc. Since the monitor died (power light comes on but nothing on screen) I figured I would invest in the latest and greatest resolution (1440) which of course was pushing my hand to upgrade the video card as well.

I plan on buying the monoprice monitor and maybe doing my upgrades when I can get a good card around the $250 range.

I actually had bought a 7850 from Microcenter a few weeks back to try and they gave me two coupons for like 5 games (Farcry, sleeping dogs, hitman, Bioshock and Tomb Raider). I then decided that I needed a beefier card for the 1440 monitor so I took it back. They told me not to worry about the coupons.

Now I need to know if I can really sell the coupons with the powercolor to make this more palatable.

Another question, would this card with my old school Phenom II Black X4 running at 3.4 hold me off on a mobo/proc upgrade for a few months?

re: Video Card deals

When the 7950's get below 250 I am buying another one with a new PSU. OC'ing both, the 7950 OC is supposed to get close to a stock 7970 from what I have read.
