It wasn't even a bashing of LSU. It just happened to use us as an example. They're just acknowledging the fact that the popularity of baseball is dying out in the African American community. All of that aside, do I think they said anything we don't already know? Not at all....

Maybe that was the objective of the OP, too. He generated alot more buzz than if his thread had this title: Journalist writes balanced article about shifting demographics in college baseball Geez, who on the Rant would have wanted to read about that?

The author either ignored or is unaware of the pervasive attitude among some blacks to avoid anything that is considered "white" lest they would be labelled as a "sell-out", "wanna-be whitie", etc. That includes playing sports considered "white" such as baseball, hockey, lacrosse & some others. That attitude explains why so few blacks participate in anything other than basketball, football & track. If a lack of baseball diamonds in inner-cities leads to few blacks in NCAA baseball, why are so many in NCAA football? There aren't a huge # of FB fields in those places. If kids there play FB, it just a handful per team playing in the street or in a small empty lot. At least there should be few to no black linemen in the NCAA if the lack of fields were the cause. That absence would be due to black kids playing FB w/ a smaller than 11-on-11, meaning no one blocking for the QB or trying to rush the QB. Honestly, think back to playing touch or tackle FB w/ friends or relatives as a kid. Did any of you have players serving as offensive or defensive linemen?

Are you serious? Have you taken a look at major league baseball rosters at any time in the last, oh, 40 years? This is clearly a case of crafting a rationale to fit a personal bias.

I have no idea where to even begin with this.

Who said this is the only cause? Just read the goddamn article. It's almost like you idiots WANTED the author to race bait, but he didn't so now you're all pissed off.

This thread has seriously brought the laughs. I'm glad people don't actually read things before commenting on them.

I played H.S. Baseball and the Blacks that played football and basketball were scared of the fast ball. One of my friends, a great basket ball player, was so scared of the fast ball, he peed. Another one, took a pop fly in the eye from left field. My point is that too incorporate them into the college scene they need to be introcduced to baseball at an early age! Society deal.

It is not mandatory to have a black player on the team just to say we have a black player. If so, then we should have more Hispanic and Oriental players also. If we have black players like Bell,Mitchell, etc. it is because they are good enough to play , and they wanted to play for LSU.

I wouldn't say LSU does more than just provide local context to a story about declining participation by blacks in baseball. I have no problem with the story whatever. It's hardly a new story, by any stretch. But he covered all the right bases. It starts with 11.7 scholarships. I think that, more than anything, kills it in the black community. Of course, beyond that, baseball has become very expensive, making it more of an upper-middle class sport, almost like golf or tennis, with all the equipment one needs to purchase and the private lesson and the cost of select ball.

I don't see how you came to the conclusion you did in your comment. It makes no sense. All he uses LSU for is as local context of a story about a national trend. Completely fair. It's accurate. He covered most of the reasons I can think of for the decline (although the decline is hardly new). And yes, I think it would be a GREAT story to explore if the perception of basketball as a "black" sport is hurting white participation in the sport at a youth level. Watching some mostly white high schools play in the last couple of years, I'm beginning to think that's the case.

It's not a problem. The best players will play in the end, regardless of race. It just so happens the better majority are white. The same goes for blacks in basketball and football. It's not an "issue," so treating it as one is unnecessary, IMO. ETA: Further, it's not like there is any issue of discrimination here either. If that were the case, sure, this would be a relevant news.

^^^^^ thats the long and the short of it if you have one black and one white receiver but the white one runs better routes he should play if you have a black pitcher and a white pitcher and the black one controls his pitches better well you guessed it he should play now if you want to talk about culture then it seems purely from participation that there are more blacks that play basketball and more whites that play baseball...its culture just like there are many latin and southern americans that play baseball/soccer you rarely see them play football its just a culture thing its just what everyone seems interested in and by the way Ill advocate for Carter...nicest guy you can meet

Again just bc something isn't an "issue" doesn't mean you can't still write about it.

Wow! You baseball fans have sensitive, . . . er , skins. It was a very well written piece that was not attacking LSU at all. It was just looking at a cultural and social change in America. The reasons for it were well documented and none of them were racial discrimination. But for those of you who say baseball is not a black sport? You ever heard of Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Lou Brock, Derek Jeter, Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, and Ken Griffey Jr. ? If not, go to the Hall of Fame and it will tell you all about them.

+1 it is amazing how one-sided some of the people want to be....bring on the agenda, no matter what most black play BBall or Football, not Baseball, so there are not as many black baseball players. ..a lot of the black ball players in the majors have played football and are doing dual sports, or are from Latin America. much harder to find a baseball park in the black communities than a BBall court.
