Basically saying anything after 1990. It's not as good as the likes of Good, Bad and the Ugly, Original True Grit, Butch Cassidy, Magnificent Seven and Outlaw Josey Wales, but since 1990 what else? Unforgiven? Young Guns? Dances With Wolves?

What say you?

I say it's a comedy more than a western.

I'd put Tombstone up there maybe right under Unforgiven. I also like Costner's Wyatt Earp and Open Range is great

Isn't Unforgiven after 1990 - don't you think that is better?

I prefer Open Range to Tombstone as well.

Unforgiven is the best western that has come out in the last 40 years.

Y'all are going to laugh, but I this is one of those movies I've never seen. I need to just to get cultural references.

I enjoyed Open Range and Wyatt Earp.

Open Range is pretty damn good. Not sure when Lonesome Dove came out either, but that one is great. I think it was pre '90 though.

I would say unforgiven and tombstone are a 1a and 1b for me post 1990.

Late 80's.

Also, I just watched Tombstone on Encore or Showtime or something, one of those, and no it's not the best modern western... It's probably the most quotable though.

My vote is The Unforgiven. In spite of the hate by critics and this board I liked 3:10 to Yuma and Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward.

I am not a huge western fan but loved The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and Blazing Saddles.

Check out Appaloosa. It is worthy of a mention.

The original 3:10 was better IMO. I don't really love the remakes, though I did like Open Range and True Grit.

I think we'd better establish what is defined by "Western"

in fact I'd argue on whether Tombstone even qualifies as a movie - it's more akin to a sketch than an actual film

Forgot about that one. Watched it because I am a huge Ed Harris fan.
