I picked up a live oak at the local Wal-marts, advice needed...

I picked up a live oak at Wal-mart today when I was strolling through the plant section looking at vegetables.
I paid $18 bucks for it. The trunk is a little bit bigger around than my thumb and about 6 foot tall. It's good and bushy looking... best of the 4 or 5 they had.
Anyway, is there anything I need to know before planting it? I think I can tell which way it was facing as it's grown the last year or two at the nursery, and know I should plant it facing the same direction. But what about the time of year? Don't you want to plant trees in the winter? Should I transplant to a bigger container and baby it another year on the porch until next winter if so? Should I just go ahead and plant it?
The thing is I want to plant it at a camp where I won't be able to visit too often and water it, although I plan on watering it every time I do go...
Thoughts?

Winter is the best time to plant, so you are a little late for the prime, but I would still go ahead and plant it now. Water it as you can and hope for the best, if it fails you did not loose much

It's got a year warranty on it... and if I keep it on the patio I'm basically throwing that away. That said, part of me thinks a bigger container and another year of growth could hardy it up with some attention.

if it is for sale at wal mart, then it it time to plant it now...I would put it in the ground as soon as you get a chance so that it can get established during the spring rains...

Put an Updyke detector around it.

I've done that with some other trees like dogwoods, but not live oaks.
A buddy of mine had one come up in his flower bed under a monster tree, but we couldn't get it out without cutting the main roots.
The purchase was spur of the moment because I plan on going to clean up the camp where it's going to be planted this week. If I decide to plant it...

Yes, late fall is the best time to plant almost everything, so they have time to establish new roots before the growing season. I would go ahead and plant it and hope for a wet spring( were suppose to have one). If not, I guess thats what the warranty is for
It blows my mind they warranty plants at these places now. We have people ask us every now and then if we will. People buy plants, kill them, and come buy more, its the circle of life

Don't plant it close to your house

this.
My not too smart step dad planted about 10 trees no further than 30 foot from the house and we had to cut almost every 1 of them

Its amazing how often this happens. Not bad for the tree trimming business though

People don't realize how big they get in about 40 years.
Dad has one about 20 years old and we have to trim the shite out of it every summer. If we don't it turns into a 30' tall bush.

Thanks for the advice... I'm heading down to plant it now.
So what do you think? Plant it 90 feet away from the SW corner of the camp? I'm looking to thro shade on it in the fall...

That sounds good, but you'll be waiting a while to get good shade from it
Give it 20 years and it'll be big and pretty.

40ft is a proper distance for a live oak. fertilize with miracle gro tree sticks or a root stimulator...
keep fertilizing, they can grow like weeds

Plant it. If you can keep it watered for the first two weeks it will probably make it. The smaller the tree the easier to get them rooted IMO.
Even if you can water it every three days it should make it. I planted some in July and a week later went on vacation for a week. They are 20' tall now.
