3-4 OLB Stock Watch, Combine Weigh Ins

rotoworld-
Oregon DE/LB Dion Jordan measured 6-foot-6 1/4 and 248 pounds at Saturday's NFL Combine weigh-in.
He's put on roughly 20 pounds since the college season; Jordan admitted he got as light as 226 in 2012. We suspect Jordan has been putting on weight in an effort to show he's more of an at-the-line player as opposed to a 4-3 type linebacker who drifts back into space. As a fifth-year senior this past season, Jordan tallied 10.5 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, and three forced fumbles.
LSU DE/OLB Barkevious Mingo measured 6-foot-4 1/4 and 241 pounds at Saturday's NFL Combine weigh-in.
If Mingo seems shorter than expected, it's because he plays very upright on tape and that's among the concerns for him among NFL evaluators. When Mingo makes himself an upright target for offensive linemen, he becomes easier to block. We still suspect the freakishly athletic Mingo will star in Combine workouts.
League personnel are reportedly not surprised Georgia OLB Jarvis Jones is skipping Combine workouts because he's not expected to "test very well" in the 40-yard dash and vertical leap.
"Numerous sources" tell NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah that Jones needs extra time to improve his test numbers because his measurable athleticism is unimpressive. Jones is the only player sitting out the Combine despite being 100 percent. It's quite possible his "stock will drop" if he tests poorly at Pro Day

Jordan and Mingo are getting swallowed up by NFL tackles
Jordan is a 5th year senior and still plays at less than 230? Good luck with that

I'll never get it, people put waaaaay too much into these numbers. So a kid is lightening fast without his pads on, what does that say about when he does have them on? It actually changes the way you run. Mingo looks fast as hell with his pads on, so if he ran a 4.6, I wouldn't be worried.

Rotoworld is saying some teams are taking Jarvis Jones completely off of their boards. Apparently they're concerned about his neck.

Remember DaQuann Bowers TB? He was a consensus Top 5 or even #1 overall potentially. He fell to #51 over medical issues amd questions about his work ethic similarly.
Fortunately for us the negatives continued to stilt his progress with the Bucs. Dumb as a rock too- arrested at an airport last week for having a loaded .40cal in his carry on. Sez he "forgot".

quote:I don't remember this affecting his draft grade, but I do remember his knee being a major issue. He injured it, but it wasn't the recovery scouts were worried about, it was the long term health and potential weakening of it.

Bruce Irvin played this year at 248.

I cant recall a big time playmaker in recent history being drafted with serious health issues known.

Bruce Irvin played this year at 248.
If you look at the top 20+ guys in sacks last year, Von Miller is the only guy in their weight range. Neither of these guys are Von Miller.
It might not be as big a deal if those guys were actually really productive in college, playing that light...but neither were. Mingo and Jordan combined for 9.5 sacks last year.
We all saw Mingo get pushed around a ton. And if we're being honest, he didn't show up any more than Montgomery or Edwards this year. Those guys were interchangeable.

Neither Jordan nor Mingo were pushed around. Both played hurt and missed time due to injury.
Combine numbers:
Clay Mathews 240 pounds
Cameron Wake 236 pounds
Von Miller 246 pounds
Mingo 241 pounds
Jordan 248 pounds
That's 3 of the top 5 sack leaders in the league. JJ Watt is a 3-4 DE, aldon smith was a de coming out and only listed ten pounds heavier than Jordan last season.
Both of these guys have more than enough frame to be extremely successful in the NFL.

Did you miss the part where it said Jordan put on 20 pounds for the combine? Dude played in the 220's at 6'6.

I don't think Mingo is capable of bulking up.

I'm not sure why we think that means it doesn't count. We have an official combine weight measurement. The weight he is literally at today. And it's more than many of the great pash rushers in the league at the same point in their development. And at over 6'6, he has plenty of room to bulk up more as he developes. I'm failing to see the major concern.
