Does this justify buying a new car?.?

So I moved back to LA on a corporate relo and went to the DMV to register the vehicles and boat. I knew I would get hosed on the state tax, but this is ridiculous....
Registered my truck but held off on the wife's car. She has a 2012 with a NADA over 40K, this means I will likely be looking at paying over 3k to the DMV to register a car I already paid taxes on once. I know it is not a sound financial move but I am so pissed I am thinking about trading the thing in and buying a 2013. Talk me down from the ledge here..

No, it doesn't justify trading in the car. I know there are some states that LA has a reciprocal agreement with which would allow you to claim up to 4% on your taxes.

Moving from a state with 2% reciprocity so I have to pay 7% of blue book value

i'd leave that fricker registered in the other state.

Double taxation of a vehicle is an absolute crock of shite. I've never understood how this is legal.

Set up LLC in montana. There is an attorney up there that will do this. No sales tax ever on any vehicle you purchase. Plus you don't have to get an inspection sticker.

Is that why I see so many RV's with MT plates? I assumed they had some vehicle registration loophole.

Yep! No sales tax. I think they charge 200-300 to register a vehicle once you have the LLC set up.

In no way possible would it be worth it IMHO... It sucks but it's still your cheapest option

Can you elaborate more on this? How does this impact existing auto insurance (assuming I purchased a new vehicle)?
What can Louisiana do to prevent or find out about this?

All sales-tax states will do that, so you would still end up paying sales tax if you changed residence states too quickly. What is different among the states is how long you have to have the RV registered in the no-sales-tax state before the new state no longer asks you to pay their use tax. It might be six months for some states and it might be never for others.
Assuming this applies for cars and trucks, what is Louisiana's position on this? Also, if I go this route, since I have already purchased and paid for my two other vehicles, can I switch them to Montana and hopefully assume lower insurance premiums, if I set up a legal LLC in Montana?

I've lived in VA for 5 years, had my vehicle registered in TN the whole time. Legal? No. But frick em. Va should feel blessed that I live in their shitty state. They should be paying me.

You pay for insurance for where the car is.... Not where it is registered. I have a very unique situation and this is what I do

If you go this route just put the LLC as an additional interest. This will avoid any claim/title issues in the event of a total loss.
