Isn't he around 280? What's the ideal weight for a 3-4 de? And pat I think he could improve his run stopping abilities if he focused more on it. Seems like the past few years he has focused on rushing the passer over much else because we had gotten such little production in that area. I could be wrong but I still think he could be a solid player for us

6'3 is a tad on shorter side and 280 is a bit lite. I'd rather some 6'4-6'5 295-315 type mother frickers like a lot of 3-4 de's. And if you are undersized, they better be making up for it in talent... i don't think will does at all.

it would benefit us all the less peeps watched espn-tmz. I really cannot take much of it at all anymore. Most everything related to sports except the sports themselves
--------------------

hope it doesn't spoil anyone's breakfast but-

It's gonna cost $5.5mil of cap to cut Smith. Then ya save $3.5mil of cap net. New deal would be whatever amt on top of the $3.5. Minimum for him almost $900K. So $3.5 to cut him and $4.5+ or more to keep him. Pretty sad

True. Although i think we could still use him for depth if nothing else, but i wouldn't want him to be getting snaps ahead of younger/more talented guys just because he is a vet. And I say all this assuming he takes a big cut of course.

re: Saints Ask Vilma & Smith to Restructure Contracts.....

wiki actually has a good 3-4 page HERE

Ideally 3–4 DEs should weigh 285–300 pounds (129–140 kg) and be able to beat double teams by getting a push.

Flanking the NT, DEs defend the gaps on either side of the tackle he lines up across from. Each guard-tackle gap is a B gap and the space outside each tackle is called a C gap. Other 3–4 teams (such as the San Diego Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys) primarily make each lineman responsible for only one gap.

According to former general manager Randy Mueller, “the 3–4 defensive end is easier to identify and find when it comes to scouting and acquiring personnel,” while 4–3 DEs “are rare and hard to find and therefore very expensive to keep. There is no question that speed pass rushers are very much an impact position on the football field and their cap numbers reflect that. On the other hand, 3–4 defensive ends can be found easier and are much less expensive when it comes to ‘cap dollars’.

that's why you can't keep too many longer term vets as backup & special teamers. Ya gotta have the reps to justify the price.

REVIEW

pretty suhweet for Herring. $12,000 per snap played

Hey what is the deal with the little hyperlinked adds on the page now? Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm more willing to give Vilma a chance in the new scheme, but I don't think Smith fits at all. Too small for a DE and I don't think he'd do we'll at that OLb spot

Thanks Blues. I am still pretty new to the ins and outs of the 3-4 but i know the general outlook of it. I'm sure i will become more familiar as the season comes

Restructure? They need to redo those bitches or dump them

Aren't they both old (i mean for football) and on the tail end of their careers?
Are either or them worth the effort?

I really don't know what we're expecting from Smith.
At all.

For you and me they may not be worth te effort but f your only job is structuring contract to fill the roster then you better make an effort.

Are you suggesting this is just a random act to justify one's paycheck and make it look like the organization is "trying"? I didn't think either of these guys was worth restructuring at this point. Figured we'd go after younger players.

I expect him to flail when someone hooks him around the neck and to kiss his biceps after each of the 4 sacks he get's this year.

Would Smith even play for the minimum? With the premium on 4-3 defensive ends somebody will be willing to give him more than that.

Maybe he's got enough of a guilty conscience about the way he's already raped the team he'd do it.

No i am saying keeping veterans on the team is worth an effort, even if it may not work out. I think Smith could play 3-4 DE
