Restructure? They need to redo those bitches or dump them. There's no way we can spend that kind of money (spread out or not) on players that may not even fit into a 3-4.

This is the correct statement!!!

Hell no. We should just cut ties and move on

Isn't there guaranteed money for 2013 in both Smith's and Vilma's contracts? If you are have to pay them then at least see if they can play in the new scheme.

Ideally 3–4 DEs should weigh 285–300 pounds (129–140 kg) and be able to beat double teams by getting a push

And Will Smith is listed at 282, but I'm convinced he's more like 290 because 282 has been his listed weight since his rookie year. Obviously he has put on weight. Also, the best thing he does is bull rush, which requires pure strength. His strength could help him in the 3-4. I don't think he is staying, but I don't understand everyone saying he is too small. He is pretty much the same size as Jordan.

It's gonna cost $5.5mil of cap to cut Smith. Then ya save $3.5mil of cap net. New deal would be whatever amt on top of the $3.5. Minimum for him almost $900K. So $3.5 to cut him and $4.5+ or more to keep him. Pretty sad

Yep, so get him to take the $1mm (+$3.5) and keep him. Otherwise, cut his arse and spend $3.5mm.

that's assuming he would take that.

We gripe about him but his 6 sacks a year avg the past 3 seasons should be worth more than that on the open market. He wouldn't have to learn 3-4 either at age 32 either.

If that was truly the case, Smith would have some trade value...which I don't think he has. As was mentioned on here many times since Smith signing his second contract, we all knew this was going to end badly for the Saints. It was a matter of when we'd get screwed.
