Dwight Freeney is released by the Colts...is he a HOFer?

I don't really know what the statistical measurements are for the position. What does the MSB think? 7 time Pro Bowl, 107 sacks, 44 forced fumbles. 7 seasons with double digit sacks.

Those numbers seem to be on par with Warren Sapp and he got into the hall of fame.

Sapp was a DT though.

Certainly not first ballot
If he was more dominant in the run game it might warrant some discussion

This. He's not well-rounded enough for me to put him in the Hall either. The guy was great getting after the QB but he has never been good stopping the run.

Of course he is. It won't be first ballot, but it'll be within 5 years of his eligibility. The sportswriters who vote might talk a big game about wellroundedness but when it comes to voting they always base their justification around stats.

It took Derrick Thomas ten years to get into the Hall of Fame. The HOF committee's justification for this was that he wasn't a well-rounded player. They said he had problems stopping the run and wasn't great in pass coverage. Derrick Thomas finished his career with more than twice as many tackles as Dwight Freeney has now.

This pretty much. Another comparison would be Kevin Greene, who has much better stats than Freeney and still hasn't managed to get past the finalist stage.

Freeney is only 32
So if he plays another 4/5 seasons and adds another 35-40 sacks it will help his case. Especially since he will probably start being used like Jason Taylor late in his career. Latch on to a team and get using as only a pass rush specialist.

I think the success of Robert Mathis is a statement of Freeney's dominance. Even when Mathis was at his best, teams still preferred to double-team Freeney. Mathis probably would have been an average pro with another player on the opposite end.

Kevin Greene has the third most sacks all time, and 53 more sacks than Freeney currently has, 10 seasons of over 10 sacks. And he's struggling to come close to getting in. Not to mention Freeney has a few DEs either younger or the same age as him still playing who have better numbers right now.
That being said, it's a bit random, as Richard Dent got in while having much worse stats, so it's hard to say.

Greene from age 32 to 37 registered 75 sacks....
say Freeney gets into a system that could us him like that and he plays another 6 seasons and averages the 12.5 that Greene did....
Possible although unlikely.... 75 sacks would put Freeney at 182.5 for his career #3 on list 15.5 sacks behind White.

Considering Freeney has had 13.5 sacks the past two seasons combined, I would say it's extremely unlikely. And guys like Peppers, Allen, and Ware look like they will be ahead of him as well.

I guess it depends on where he ends up playing to close out his career. I don't know if he can register that many sacks but there is always a chance I guess. He played in a 3-4 defense last year and only had 5 sacks after spending his entire career playing in a 4-3 defense.
as time goes on though, won't voters look at DE's a little differently when they are considering a player's career for a Hall of Fame selection? I mean the game has changed a lot and will continue to change.

Nope sadly the last 2 seasons ruined his chances.
