I've bought a lot of MSI cards and generally had good luck with them. But then I had to RMA one of them. They took a month to send me a replacement, and it was another defective card. They got it right the second time around, but I'm not dealing with them anymore unless there's a steal of a sale when I decide to buy another card.

The MSI Lightning is supposedly the best 7970 on the market right now. I've never had one either, only sapphire until my recent card

I realize manufacturer reliability is a big deal but I do feel like that can happen with any company sometimes.

IMO gpu is much less likely to be doa so fwiw I would feel less crappy about buying off brand.

On a side note I was monitoring my pc temps last night with hwmonitor. What is normal? Good? Bad?

I purchased EVGA. On certain cards they have a trade up program if a newer model comes out within 90 days of your purchase.

Yeah, PSU and RAM seems to common DoA products. That is mostly because they are more manufactures who make shtty products on the cheap.
Rule of thumb, stay with the top brands. You get what you pay for as they say.

I agree on top brands. Although I have read some stuff about seagate barracuda hdds not being as reliable lately. I thought that was odd for a big name like that but no one is perfect.
Of course that didn't stop me from buying one still. I have updated op with all my purchases so far.

HDD are some of the more unreliable parts not only for doas but later failures. General consensus is that SSDs, if not DOA, are not super prone to sudden failure. If you keep your OS files on an SSD and just use your HDD for unimportant files until you get another for raid then you should be good. When i bought my HDD I paid more to get a WD with a 5 year warranty. Hasn't failed yet, but I doubt its really much better than those with a 2 year warranty.

My hdd will just have steam files basically. I will hate if I lose saved games but the games themselves can just be reinstalled. All my media files will stay on my laptop and backed up with an external that I have.

Is there any reason not to take the free memory? I know the latency of the free memory is 10 as opposed to 9 but will I even notice that? The only other thing is i would rather blue than black but I'll get over that for free.
It's also 1 module of 8gb as opposed to 4x2

Free ram is free ram. That's nearly 50 bucks in your pocket. I wouldn't buy a crappy mobo because it came with free ram, but if a good mobo you were planning on buying offers free ram there no reason not to get it. I guarantee you will not notice a difference between 10 cas and 9. One module is theoretically better than 2 anyway. Less chance the other stick will be doa and further expand ability up to 32gb.

By everything I have read the 2x4 9 cas would be better than 1x8 10 cas. The Info I havnt been able to find is if I would notice that difference at all, I lean towards no. I think I will take the free ram for now. I'm not even sure I will fit the heat spreaders anyway cause that seems to be a common problem so why spend the money.

You will not notice it. Besides its free. Worst case scenario you buy some newer ram and save this module for an htpc or other build.
The heat spreaders are already on the module. If they interfere with your CPU cooler u can remove them. Plenty of YouTube videos on it. I for one think they are a marketing gimmick.

Just picked then up. Only thing I have left is my CPU and optical unless I can get windows on a flash drive.
