I know he recruits well and that it's part of coaching, but both his titles were when his teams were hands down the most talented....basically, if his teams are on equal talent level or worse, he usually loses....sorry, but that's a sign of a very below average coach!

This is going to sound weird, but I think Calipari going to UK has a little to do with these UNC teams not being as good as the ones he won titles with. He is still getting McDonalds all Americans, but cleaning up on the top 5 players ain't happening for Roy as much these days, Coach Cal seems to be getting a lot of guys that probably would have gone to UNC if Cal wasn't at UK.

His inability to teach defense is laughable, 3 point shooting teams light them up every year! He preaches "help" defense instead of making his guys work and man up....thus the 3 point barrages his teams give up. Ever notice how when Duke has a less talented team they still hang with or beat UNC? Duke will blow their doors off this wed

I thought he was a pretty good coach in his younger days. I can remember him coming into the P-Mac and beating our team with Shaq. Stanley and Chris with good old fashioned team basketball.

But ulimately, IMHO he's a two-face. He portrays a goodie-two-shoe image that he wants to be known for yet he's shown time and again over the years that it's a fraud.

That catches up with you and even kids eventually see through that.

That isn't weird, I've seen it discussed before and is very true, UNC isn't getting the recruits they once were. It was heading that way to begin with but turning Henson, Barnes, and McAdoo into multiple year players was the final blow.

OP is out of his mind. You can't call him overrated and reference 2 Titles at the same time. Come on, man.

And I'm a Duke fan too. After LSU of course

"Overrated" isn't the way I'd describe him, even though I can't stand the prick.

I'd say he is the most full of shite coach in all of the sports. He's Tommy Tuberville with a national championship.

How can Roy be overrated? He has two national championships and seven final four appearances. Like Les Miles, his teams might not look pretty at times but he usually wins big.

i definitely agree that williams isnt overrated. roy was a huge choke artist at kansas, but the 2 national titles at unc have helped him redeem himself.

however, williams is nothing like les miles. many of williams' UNC teams have been offensive juggernauts, with their up tempo pace.

Perception can be in the eye of the beholder.

Most people think Izzo is a great coach who coaches up his talent.

Yet if we follow polls like we do in CFB - Michigan State is the #1 most overratd team since 2000...based on preseason polls and final rankings.

They are also the #1 most overrated team of the 1990's - based on the same criteria. Izzo has been the coach since 1995.

Perhaps that means nothing - except pollsters like Izzo - perhaps at Michigan State high expectations are a reason for his greatness as a coach? Worth mentioning though.

Kansas is #18 for the 90's and North Carolina is #12 this past decade for Roy Williams.

But they have talent across the board still. How many Miami players do you think got offers from UNC?

Miami has a really old roster, literally. Here are some of their main players.

quote:

Kenny Kadji - 24 years old (turns 25 in May)
Durand Scott - 23 years old
Reggie Johnson - 23 years old
Julian Gamble - 23 years old
Trey McKinney Jones - 22 years old (turns 23 in August)

Except he's won a frick ton more. So this statement is dumb. He's won 2 NC, and been to 4 Final Fours with UNC. I don't get the hate.

2 National Championships buddy. In both seasons UNC was expected to win it all and they did.

Roy isn't as aggressive with these players as Cal, but he does have several he specifically targets every year. This year he has all his chips in on Wiggins. If he doesn't get Wiggins, UNC could be in for another dog fight next year. They have talent, but its talent that needs to develop, and that won't come until their 3rd or 4th year.

Yeah, you are an idiot. See how coach Cal does when he doesn't have any talent. Damn, who is a good coach to you?! I guess Coach K must suck too because he gets All-Americans every year but never wins it all, same with Self, and Donovan who didnt even make the tournament multiple years in a row.
