If football had to get a last-second FG to beat the worst team in the SEC....

Say for example, Drew Alleman hits a 22 yard FG to beat Kentucky, 40-38 this past year. This board would have melted down, the internet would have blown up, Leslie's kids would have been kidnapped, Javi Sanchez would have been blamed, and people would have rioted in the streets. The apocalypse of the program would have been predicted, with visions of 4-8 seasons for the rest of eternity. NO body would have been excited to pull out such a win.
Yet basketball does it today, and there is much love for a team that plays with so much heart and determination. They aren't perfect, but damn if they don't will themselves to victory! Hickey is celebrated for the last 3 minutes that he played today and not over-analyzed for the poor first 37 minutes. The first-year coach is lauded for getting the most out of his talent. (I agree with all of this, by the way)
Funny how football trumps basketball....funny how being spoiled in football causes different reactions than being starved in basketball.
I wish the Rant would behave more like the jubilant basketball fans than the spoiled football fans when we WIN football games.
Just some random thoughts. Great ugly win today! Can't wait to see the guys at home Wednesday vs. Vandy in another winnable game!
And here's to the Rant melting down when baseball loses their first mid-week game to an instate school this year

sunshine pumpers will tell you that the football team couldn't get up for a lowly opponent

Trying to compare what this team did today, compared to our football team is idiotic. This team is not loaded with talent. They won with effort and heart. Talent wise, they were equal. They beat an SEC team on the road. The football team only plays one or 2 teams a year with equal talent. So your point is, to be kind. Stupid!

While I agree with your post, the talent disparity between LSU football and Kentucky football is far greater than the disparity in LSU and State basketball.
A better analogy would've been LSU football and Auburn football. Oh wait...

Meh, I don't really agree with the OP's sentiments. The yay, let's just be happy to win at all kind of crap is not going to get you championships. The basketball team is being rebuilt from the cellar. The expectations are quite obviously different. Are Duke fans going to jump up and down with glee if they have to squeak out a win over the worst team in their conference or don't play up to their talent and squander championship opportunities? Personally I think it's obvious and quite reasonable that the reactions are different given how drastically different the two situations are.
Success breeds different expectations. That's part of the process. Would you like us to rush the field if we beat the number one team in football again? Probably not. And the reason is quite obviously because the expectations are now higher because of the elevation of the program.
Incredible come back tonight for the Tigers. I'm looking forward to the day that we are disappointed that this game had to come down to this. That's the day the Tigers will be consistent NCAA tournament contenders and I prefer that to the fleeting thrill and jubilation of having a comeback win against a sub-par team.

did the board meltdown for the Bluegrass Miracle?
That would've been the closest thing, I think.
Also, expectations are lower for BB with a new coach and a team that hasn't been great the past few years.

Johnny Jones is in year one of a rebuilding project. In Saban's fist year at LSU, we were thrilled to win any SEC game. Hell, we rushed the field for an overtime win over 11th ranked Tennessee.
Things are different when you're an established program. And then add to it, in football a single regular season game can determine your postseason fate. In the other sports, the stakes of losing are not as high.

Is this shite real life? LSU football has the most talent in the country. They should be cruising through teams way more often than they do.
LSU basketball has sucked for three seasons. Every win is huge.
Plus winning on the road in SEC basketball is so difficult. Everything about playing on the road in this conference is a joke.

Higher expectations for fball

dude you know why this is the case
football should be in contention for the title yearly and when we aren't people don't like it
basketball is rebuilding we broke a couple year tournament less streak by goign one and done in the NIT, noone was expecting us to really do anything this year.
in basketball when we win a close one against anyone its huge.
in football when we win a close game against most teams (excluding Bama Florida, USCe and Georgia) the board melts down.

Because basketball doesnt have top 3 talent year after year but only plays at a top 15 level

Do you really not understand expectations?
LSU football is a top 5 program in the country and has won 2 national championships and been to a third in the last 10 years.
Football is the money maker and the athletic budget sustainer.
This thread is retarded.

If you don't know that the expectations of the football team are different than the basketball team this year you have probably been under a rock since 1999.

Didn't we go undefeated in midweek games last year?

Expectations are everything. If this basketball team had anywhere near the talent of the football team it might have been different. Personally I have always enjoyed rooting for an underdog and it makes the wins like last night oh so sweet!

pretty awful comparison considering where the 2 programs are right now. football has been running at the highest level since 03. basketball is up and down and usually down for the last say 20 years.
so clearly if our football team coached by a guy that has been here since 05 is struggling with uk its going to piss people off. now basketball isnt at the top yet and its being coached by a first year coach that has to make up for the past coach being terrible on the recruiting trail so any win will please people.

I just think Grad, the difference is a comination of things...apathy about basketball in general and relative expectations.
Expectations for baseball and football are high and maybe for some exaggerated. The expectations for basketball for those few who care are low and there's the honeymoom for a new coach and the venom for Trent and what he left that gives JoJo no some slack in that regard for most.
