every scrimmage i've gone to has had laird in RF with the starters.
Stevenson has been in CF and McMullen in RF with the 2nd team. It was the 4th scrimmage i believe before i ever saw McMullen get on base, but he had a really good 4th scrimmage. Made a great diving play, roped a single, and had a steal.

You do realize that hitting is more than just singles?
Raph Rhymes last year had 100 hits. 85 were singles, 11 doubles, and 4 home runs. When I analyze a player a perfect score or (as good as it gets) would have to qualify as someone who can do everything at the plate.
Raph is a exceptional hitter and fits perfectly into Mainieri's play but he doesn't have that wow factor when it comes to his bat. He hits for average...but until he starts adding in extra base hits in regular fashion I can't label him as the best.

Okay, you're going to have to explain this to me, because I don't understand the categories.
That's like saying "to qualify for a perfect score for fielding, a player would have to be able to do everything defensively, including making his throws."
But then why have the categories of hitting power and arm strength in the first place? Are they different categories, or are they just subcategories? How would you have rated Wade Boggs or Tony Gwinn in the hitting category?

It goes to the old dichotomy of necessary and sufficient. Batting takes the total package into play. That includes power to some extent, but also looks at ability to hit to the correct part of the field, to execute bunts, and situational hitting such as sacrifice flies. It also looks at how you slug and when you hit, what types of hits they are. So while it is necessary for one to be able to do everything outside of power to get a great hitting score, it isn't sufficient, because you still have to look at the power component. They are broken out in to two categories because they explain to different things, power just happens to be a part of hitting.
Think of a guy like VORP Donkey (Adam Dunn) or Carlos Pena. Those guys aren't great "hitters," but they have great power. You then have guys like Ichiro who is a great hitter in the pure sense, but he isn't a complete hitter since he has rare power. Then you have a guy like Pujols who puts them together.

As bbap said, McMullen has been the second team RF in every scrimmage I've seen this spring. Unfortunately for him, he has not been on base many times. Of course this does not mean he won't hit later, but it almost certainly means he will not be a starter when the season opens next weekend.

I obviously get the concept, which is why I asked "Are they different categories, or are they just subcategories?", but this just begs the question: why do it that way? Would not the information be easier to process if it were broken into cleaner categories?
It was not at all what I was thinking the categories meant, and it also brings up the question of whether or not throwing ability is considered part of fielding ability, which in light of this information on the hitting category, I still can't say for sure.

Yes, that's a part of fielding so it would have to be considered. For example analyzing a shortstop defensively I would need to know if he can 1) glove it and ) make an accurate throw.
Arm strength stems from this but can be measured in an entirely different fashion.

Hitting, power, and arm strength are tools. Major league organizations draft players on the tools they presently have and tools they may project down the road. Of course a players rating isn't the only thing that makes up a player, but it's a good reference point on how that player stacks up against his peers.
If I was rating Boggs or Gwynn based on hitting there is no doubt they would be 80's with the way they dominated games. Ralph Rhymes isn't Boggs or Gywnn when it comes to hitting and he's yet to make the switch from aluminum to wood.
