Why wouldn't they? They still feel they're a contender for the next two years and Prince is a pretty good SF for about 10 million less than Gay

Tayshaun Prince hasn't been good for years

He's had to try and be the best player on a crappy Pistons team going nowhere. I think he'll be decent with a change of scenery

Its possible. I think they're gonna struggle to score on the perimeter. Couple years ago they had Mayo to take up the slack when Gay went down.

Ironic that Hollinger is trading for a guy that measures horrible on the scale(per) that he created.

True. Although I just read a tweet that the trade gives the Grizzlies +3 wins according to Hollingers win analysis on the ESPN trade machine. Dude invented too many damn algorithms

Not really. Gay and Prince have roughly equal PER, and that's with Gay getting 75% more attempts, but Prince makes almost half what Gay does. Seems like a move Hollinger would absolutely do.

I'm sure Ed Davis is happy to be back in the states.

Good point.

Despite how poor Gay has been, I do think Prince is a downgrade and moves them further away from actually contending. I guess the salary dump levels things out somewhat, though.

I'm waiting for Cuban to unload Dirk for picks or something and blow that place up and start to build some younger talent around Mayo

trying to rebuild around Mayo would be a massive mistake.

JC is a better PG than Collison BTW. He has a much better feel for the game.

doesn't really matter though as it seems Detroit won out on him.

And this gives Toronto a starting lineup of Lowry, Derozan, Gay, Johnson, and Valanciunas when healthy. Not bad

Toronto will be an intriguing team:

PG: Lowry/Lucas
SG: Derozan/Fields/Ross
SF: Gay/Anderson/Kleiza
PF: Amir/Bargani
C: Valacianus(sp?)/Gray

Not bad talent wise. But im not sure how that will actually work on the floor.

Might still sneak into that 8th spot with Rondo hurt. Barnagni and Kleiza are both going to be gone soon though. If not before the trade deadline then in the off season for sure

Meh. The addition of Ed Davis is really good though. I really don't think it hurts their contender status much, but I don't really think they were contenders with Gay. And I feel like he was just taking bad shots for a team that's capable of getting better looks. Prince spreads the floor slightly better than Gay would. Prince is a 38-40% 3pt shooter, while Gay is like a 32% shooter (somewhat deflated because of more (worse) shots) With their inside out play, I think Prince is a better, cheaper fit than Gay. Then you add in Austin Daye and Ed Davis, I think Memphis has done very well today.

Alvin Gentry would be a perfect coach for that team, they should be a top 3 offense. They need a backup PG though.

Gay and Derozan are almost the exact same player and block Terrence Ross going forward. Don't think this trade does much for them this year since they are losing 2 of their best players. They also will be over the cap going into the offseason, Bryan Colangelo sucks at his job.

I agree.

I just don't know who gets them buckets at the end of playoffs games now. With zone defenses its really tough to dump the ball off to a big man and let him go to work on the final possession. They already struggled to score.

Nothing wrong with having 2 uber athletic wings. Neither one is a ball handler
