If so, I'm curious what Weatherby round you use from a grains of powder/bullet manufacturer perspective? I'm looking at a 100 grain cartridge with a Barnes bullet.

I use the 100gr Barnes TSX Weatherby brand ammo in my 257. Shoots flat but costs a fortune. Hornady made ammo for the 257, at least used to and Nosler makes some choices too.

That's exactly what I'm looking at. Found it for $70 per box online. Have you ever gone through the process of breaking in a new Weatherby barrel?

Not sure about powder charge but I bought 100 Grain Norma Spitzer Weatherby factory loads and they shoot like a dream.

I have one and use 115 grain NBT or 120 NP.

Have not broken in the barrel and it is still extremely accurate.

The 257 is one of 3 Weatherby rifles I own (257,300,416). As for break-in, I took mine to the range and fired 20 rounds with a pass of the bore snake between every other round. Ammo is too damn expensive to be shoving a few dozen through the pipe. The copper fouling from the TSX's isn't too bad and the barrel cleaned fairly easily. I've only got 100 rounds or so through my 257 as the 300 gets most of my work. As for groups, I topped mine with a Swarovski variable and could get 3-shot groups of below 1" all day long at 100 yards.

The TSX works great on game but I'm sure many other bullet choices are equally good or better..

The 257 was supposedly Mr. Weatherby's most favorite cartridge ever!!

Judge, I think the 257 WM is my next rifle caliber. I have heard nothing but great things about it.

No, but my dad used to have a Ruger in .250 Savage.

I guess that doesn't help you though, does it?

I'm fired up about it. I got a sweet deal on it on Gunbroker.

Because it's considered the best all around whitetail caliber ever by more than a handful of people.

I love the caliber, but not the ammo costs.

A friend of mine literally decimated the deer population this year at our camp in west Texas using the 100 grain TSX. It seems to be a great deer caliber, especially for out there where 400 shots can be had every hunt. He killed a few at 300. I helped him clean the deer and the bullet definitely does some damage. No track job on any of the deer.

Starting to feel very comfortable with the idea of the 100 grain cartridge

At those velocities a well made 100 grain bullet will do a fine job if you put it where it needs to be. The .257 wby mag is very well proven

Due to the high ammo costs you mentioned I'm attempting to get a consensus about what particular grain cartridge I'm going to use. Whatever I go with is what I will break the barrel in with as well.

I only know one person who hunts with one and he hammers deer with it. Not sure what load he shoots though

ETA: I do know they're weatherby factory loads.

Sucks that you have to break the barrel in with a $70 box of bullets.

Yep, but I knew that going into the deal so that's on me.

Well it's a one time expense and you'll probably have the rifle the rest of your life. They are sweet shooters.

It's a shame that the caliber never caught on better than it did.
