re: Offense vs Defense in the NFL? Which wins championships?

It depends on the year and the teams. As OF RIGHT NOW the most complete team is...Denver. IMO.. Stas can be thrown away as of now. Its game planning..And matchups...

Houston is a TERRIBLE matchup for NE.. Yet Seattle could beat NE in the Dome... But they are a REALLY good matchup against the PACK.Even IN GB.'

Bottom line I wouls say Seattle should win it all.

I think it depends one team. Obviously offense rules the nfl in this era but I still believe defense is capable of winning championships. It's a qb driven league if you are the defensive team you're not gonna win without shutdown corners and a great pass rush. Either way elite qb's rule the league and win championships.

NFL: Elite QB. Colts went 2-14 a year after Manning left. Denver is 13-3 now.

So if Denver wins one playoff game this year, Peyton Mannning=Tim Tebow

Offense. Defense has been outlawed by the NFL

Update for B-more, which on paper, looks to be one of the more average teams to win it in awhile:

(total offense)/(total defense/scoring defense)

(10) / (17/12) 2012 Baltimore Ravens

quote:

Strong D:

_(9) / (5/_2) 2010 Green Bay
(22) / (1/_1) 2008 Steelers
(16) / (7/17) 2007 Giants
(15) / (4/_3) 2005 Steelers
_(7) / (9/_3) 2004 Patriots <- just a great team on both sides of the ball
(17) / (7/_1) 2003 Patriots
(24) / (1/_1) 2002 Buccaneers
(19) / (8/_6) 2001 Patriots
(16) / (2/_1) 2000 Ravens

Strong O:

_(8) / (27/25) 2011 Giants
_(1) / (25/20) 2009 Saints
_(3) / (21/23) 2006 Colts

I think "defense" when it comes to the NFL is a very broad term. The way the rules are in the modern NFL, it is very difficult for a defense to stall an offensive drive. Due to the rules on what you can and can't do to a wide receiver, quarterbacks can pick apart the zone at will. It takes a mistake by the offense more times than none to stall a drive.

I see what you are saying, but all of the defenses can be judged the same measure, points allowed. A team might give up 20 points per game, but if all of the other teams are giving up +25, the 20 point team is better defensively. I think teams that are better by comparison to other teams at stopping opponents from scoring are more likely to win the Superbowl.

Great offense and forcing turnovers (saints/green bay sb years) or decent o/no turnovers and great d (ravens)

+1. From 1982-1991, a HOF QB won the Super Bowl only three times over that ten season period. And all three of those wins came courtesy of Joe Montana. It shows you how essential a good running game and defense used to be for a team to be successful. Put Dan Marino in today's NFL and I have a hard time seeing him not winning at least one Super Bowl. It's too bad for Marino that he was born 25 years too early.

Marino would be rocking face in the NFL if he were in his prime right now.

Haven't the Saints missed the playoffs twice in the last 5 years or so?

Packers were 1 and done this year

Neither QB in the super bowl was elite IMO

I think the key to winning championships is to have good ball control once you get to the playoffs

Turnovers are what really killed SF in the superbowl

I think the defense wins championship montra is still alive and well. Just look at the Saints. They've been setting offensive records for nearly 7 years but only have one championship Bc of how poorly the defense has played.

An elite QB and a defense that forces turnovers is the new formula to win in the NFL.

Steelers and Packers are recent examples of both.
