John Williams' Scores

I love the man, how he can do such diverse and iconic music that brings you into the scene of a movie like no other. Could you imagine Luke making the Death Star trench run, the first time Chief Brody sees the shark, the temple scene when Indy uses the grail to revive his father, or the scene immediately following the invasion at Omaha Beach without the music of John Williams driving those scenes? IMO, the greatest movie composer of all time.
My top five of his scores would be Empire Strikes Back, Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Jurassic Park.

I used to put my vhs tape Jurassic Park on at night to fall asleep to, the score and overall music was that damn good.

Superman theme and Harry Potter are both pretty awesome. The iconic Godfather theme as well.
Williams has something like 46 Academy Award nominations, second only to Walt Disney.

Greats that get overlooked:
Empire of the Sun
Dracula
The Patriot
The Cowboys
JFK
Hook
The Adventures of Tintin
And I have to put Superman in the Top 5...

The portion of the score in The Cowboys that plays when Bruce Dern and the bad guys are riding up is incredibly on-point.

We went saw Star Wars in Concert at the River Center a few years ago. It was the coolest show I've ever seen.

The ultimate JW to me was Close Encounters. That iconic five tone melody was integral to the plot and a pretty cool vision of how we might break the ice with aliens.

Hard to nitpick with so many greats to choose from, but no one mentions JAWS????
Probably the most recognizable score in film history.
Talk about bringing the viewer into a scene!!

empire might be his greatest, the han/leia theme is one of my all time favorite pieces of film music.
williams work with oliver stone is equally impressive and overlooked. born on the 4th of july has some really great music in it, as does nixon and JFK.
also, memoirs of a geisha was interesting, not particularly because i like the music, but because it was so different from his usual style. i would imagine writing authentic sounding asian music would be very difficult for someone outside of the tradition.

if you mean the coppola movie, some polish guy did the score. love it too, though.

John Williams was the best film composer in the business until he unofficially retired in 2006. He only works for Spielberg now and most of his scores are recycled cues from past films he has composed.
His last truly great score was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
My Top 5 favorite soundtracks by him are probably the following:
1. Star Wars (1977)
2. Schindler's List (1993)
3. Hook (1991)
4. Jurassic Park (1993)
5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
