They might be more known worldwide, but they haven't written better songs. At least not in my opinion.

I don't think The Strokes have written anything that even comes close to "Maps", "Hysteric", "Heads Will Roll", or "Y Control", to list a few.

Don't get me wrong, I like The Strokes. I think they're a good rock band, but none of their tracks have blow my figurative doors off like the YYYs have.

Last Night is a great song. And Is This It? is a very good album. But that's pretty much it for me with the Strokes. They are an imminently skippable band on my iPod. They are the Van Halen of the aughts. You're not sure when you purchased their music or why, but for some odd reason, everyone owns at least two of their albums.

The Strokes first album is great... I remember it being released in England on Rough Trade and I had to get a copy since 9/11 delayed its US release and omitted NYC Cops (I think)... I also like the cover art better on UK version

Album was fantastic... saw them on that tour at the old Howlin Wolf and they were great... Next album came out, ehhh and I havent bought one since.

YYYs... I like songs here and there... That Maps tune is great, but, IMO, the Strokes had a great debut record... so they get the nod

Is This It is a highly regarded and influential record...

quote:

In 2003, Is This It was ranked at number seven in NME's editorial staff list of the 100 Best Albums,[71] while Rolling Stone included it at number 199 in its special updated issue of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".[72] In 2005, Spin placed it at number 100 in its list of the 100 Greatest Albums, 1985–2005,[73] while Stylus included it at number four in its list of the Top 50 Albums of 2000–2005.[64] In 2006, Is This It was ranked at number 48 by The Observer in the publication's list of The 50 Albums That Changed Music,[66] while Mojo featured it at number 33 in its list of 100 Modern Classics, 1993–2006.[74] In 2007, Q included the record at number 21 in its editorial staff list of the 21 Albums That Changed Music.[75] In 2008, Entertainment Weekly ranked it at number 34 in its list of the 100 Best Albums, 1983–2008.[76]
In 2009, Is This It was ranked as the best record of the 2000s by NME, ahead of The Libertines' Up the Bracket,[77] and at number two by Rolling Stone, behind Radiohead's Kid A, in their respective lists decided by the publications' staff and music industry members.[65] FACT placed it at number two behind Burial's Untrue in its editorial list of the 100 Best: Albums of the Decade,[63] while Billboard featured it at number three in its critics' picks of the 20 Best Albums of the 2000s.[78] The same year, The Observer included Is This It at number four in its Albums of the Decade list,[61] while Uncut ranked it at number five in its list of The 150 Greatest Albums Of The 21st Century.[79] The Times placed it at number six in its list of The 100 Best Pop Albums of the Noughties,[80] while Pitchfork Media featured it at number seven in its staff list of The Top 200 Albums of the 2000s.[70] In 2010, Stylus ranked Is This It at number six in its list of the Top Albums of the previous decade.[81] The record is included in both The Guardian's "1000 Albums To Hear Before You Die" and the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.[60][82]

re: Happy New Years Music Board Challenge: The Strokes vs. Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I'd just like to point out that Rolling Stone had as their #1 album for 2012 a Bruce Springsteen album that approximately 16 people listened to, with only three of them liking it.

Moreover, Rolling Stone had as it's #4 album for 2012 the new album from Bob Dylan. Which (a) nobody listened to or enjoyed, and (b) further buttresses my theory that Bob Dylan could record 74 minutes of armpit fart noises and RS would still call it one of the best albums of the year, if not the best.

My point here is that music rankings don't mean dick.

But if you wanted to go there:

quote:

It's Blitz! was ranked as the third best album of the year 2009 by NME and second best by Spin.[29][30] Both magazines also listed the song "Zero" as the best of the year

quote:

Fever to Tell was nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album and was certified Gold in the UK. The video for "Maps" was nominated at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and the MTV2 Award. The New York Times chose Fever To Tell as the best album of the year.[11] In June 2005, the album was ranked number 89 on Spin magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Albums, 1985–2005.[12] It is also featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In 2009, the album was named by Rolling Stone,[13] Pitchfork Media,[14] and NME,[15] the 28th, 24th, and 5th best album of the decade, respectively.

quote:

Show Your Bones was nominated for a 2007 Grammy Award for "Best Alternative Music Album".[1] In December 2006, the album was named the second best album of the year by NME magazine, as well as "Cheated Hearts" being voted the 10th best song. Rolling Stone magazine named it the 44th best album of 2006, while Spin magazine ranked it number 31 on their 40 best albums of 2006. In 2009, Rhapsody ranked it #10 on the "Alt/Indie's Best Albums of the Decade" list.[15] NME ranked it #32 on their Top 100 Albums of the Decade list.

re: Happy New Years Music Board Challenge: The Strokes vs. Yeah Yeah Yeahs

My point is I just swiped that from wikipedia and it ranges from RS to NME to Pitchfork... kinda runs the gamut...

To deny it is just silly...

**And your point on the Springsteen album just reflects how clueless you are... like it or not, it was well received critically, a #1 record and nominated for 3 grammys...

Would I have it #1? No, but your assessment is ridiculous...

Hey moron, my point wasn't who is better... thats subjective... I prefer the Strokes, you prefer YYYs... great, fantastic! I admitted I prefer them on that one album alone...

I wasn't even arguing with your pick, just submitting that they were a little more than the "VH of the '00s"

No no, it reflects only that your valuation of music is influenced by critics. Which is sad.

In the year 2012 I bet I've started 3 or 4 threads titled something akin to "List your favorite albums of the year".

Similarly, in the year 2012, I've started 4 or 5 threads titled something like "List your favorite tracks of the year".

Number of times somebody listed the Springsteen album as one of their favs of the year: 0

Number of times somebody listed a track from the Springsteen album as one of their favs of the year: 0

1. Who are you even addressing?

2. Are you actually attempting to communicate a cogent point? Or are you content to continue speaking in gibberish?

3. Does anybody here speak gibberish?

The Strokes have one album (Is this it?) that is better than all of the YYY's. However, the YYY's have a more consistent discography over time. Tough call.

I guess I'll go with the Strokes just because their debut is so awesome.
