Gold is not a rock. Do we need to have a chemistry lesson here?

If we want to get technical diamonds aren't rocks. They're minerals.

Actually...if one is better-looking or cheaper than the other, I wouldn't care. I actually wouldn't be past a ring that wasn't diamond and colorless.

I'm just a girl who likes sparkly things. Also, I'll spend money on whatever I want to spend it on. I got an LSU class ring that I'm immensely proud of, but people would say I wasted my money. Hey, it's mine and it means something to me.
That's how I would think about my wedding ring whenever I'd get married as well.

If you ever did marry, would you be opposed to using a different centerstone instead? Would that make you more likely to buy a ring?

I would have not been opposed at all fwiw to having an engagement ring with an aquamarine as a center stone. My birthstone and a gorgeous stone imo.

Go with what is in the budget. I gave my fiancé a 2.53 round, but I had the luxury of upgrading from a ring I previously bought someone 4 years ago.

I think the real point of this thread is being missed.

Gold, platinum, etc. has real value because of it's relative scarcity and the fact that it is an element and therefore cannot be created by any known process. Plus it is useful in other ways.

Diamonds have value also because of their relative scarcity, but if the process exists to Create diamonds that are equal to or better than the ones that are so sought after, the value of diamonds will drop.

I mean, the feedstock is carbon. All the real cost would have been in R&D and running the process, which will become more efficient and widespread with time and innovation.

Diamonds will cease to hold as much value unless they are artificially inflated by market manipulation.

No doubt. Diamonds aren't unique in this characteristic. Markets are manipulated for precious metals and while scarce their value is inflated far beyond their true worth.

To argue the worth of a diamond ring is like arguing the worth of a family pet.

I'd say the fiat currency we use is just becoming worth less and that is reflected in the price of precious metals.
