Is there a better way to spend a cold winter's night than in front a roaring fireplace while eating a wonderful meal? Maybe one other thing but not for this board.

The wife and I had a great meal Wednesday night at Jacmel Inn in Hammond. As expected for mid week a couple days after Christmas they were not busy. We asked to be seated in front of the fireplace in one of their dining areas and had the room to ourselves.

Started with a Pinot Noir from Santa Lucia Highlands. Nice, full bodied and went well with our meal. First course was their version of a blue cheese wedge salad with the addition of diced green apples and candied walnut. Quite good but could have used a little more of their delicious dressing which had a hint of horseradish, which I really liked.

For the entree we both had their rendition of pork osso buco. Shredded pork shank served over a polenta cake with a rich gravy that incorporated the marrow. This was accompanied by lightly sauted arugula with a hint of truffle oil. This was an outstanding dish and show a bit of creativity on the part of the chef. My only reservation about this dish was the absence of the bone and enjoyment of savoring the marrow.

Jacmel Inn is an excellent restaurant and Hammond is not that far of a drive from Baton Rouge. The atmosphere, especially with the abundance of fireplaces, is tremendous and a perfect place to spend a cold winter's night. The fact that the food is great is seals the deal for me. Here's a few pic of our meal that you might enjoy:

I haven't been there in a long time, but I am very happy to hear that it is still a quality place. Need to put it on the list for a visit in the very near future. Thanks for posting this because I have wondered if it was still as good.

Do you really get cold winter nights in BR/Hammond?

But I do agree with the heart of your sentiment.

That place has been around forever! Went there for the first time for senior prom back in 81. Glad to hear it's still great food, it's probably been mid 80s since I've been there.

I little perspective here, while I was born and raise in SE La. , I spent 10 glorious winters in NE Ohio. I think I know what cold is. And yes, it was a cold winter night last Wednesday, IIRC it was about 39F when we walked into the restaurant.

This is a great place to have on the radar during the winter in SE La. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is incredible (especially the night we went).

Where abouts in C-town. I first lived in Aurora and then moved to Westlake for about 9 years. I liked my time in NE Ohio, but there are certain things that a southerner doesn't know, like never just leap over a snow drift because you can. Ask me how I know.

At least you had a snowblower. I didn't have one till my 3rd winter there. I had a good friend that lived in Strongsville, isn't that where Bunker Hill Golf Course is?

Good review.

Jacmel was one of the first visits I ever made to a "nice" restaurant. Took my woman(now my wife) there right after we graduated college.
