Did some tasting at Mansur's last night. He's got a great selection (limited supply though). Had PVW20, Eagle Rare 17 and George T. Stagg. And a headache this morning. Drinking high octane neat, and with only a dozen oysters catching it, made for a less than joyous morning. But man, were those 3 good...I'd rank them in the order I listed (that I drank them in)

I'd love to try ER17 since ER10 is one of my top bourbons but I've never seen it around.

You and me Unc. First time trying it-he had a bottle, as did the Cove. You'll have to make a road trip. He also showed me some small bottles he special ordered from Sazerac that were out of individual barrels. I didn't dare ask what a shot of that cost-the PVW snort was $40.

Tried the latest release of the PVW20 this weekend as well. If I could sit around and drink $130 bottles of bourbon and not feel guilty about it(or get called a fool by Mrs. Afro), this might be my choice. I had one glass and switched back over to Blanton's. I really like Blanton's and it was quite disappointing to switch back over. Also tried last years ER17 a couple weekends ago after about 4 or 5 drinks and I wasn't a huge fan. The heavy oak flavor and heaviness on the palate I think makes it a drink I need to start with instead of finish with. I'll have to give it another try.

I haven't been to Churchill's in ages. I usually buy liquor at Martin Wine Cellar or Cuban Liquors. Martin has good prices, nice selection, Cuban is a little more expensive but they carry more whisky and bourbon.
I need to check out Martin Wine Cellar, for some reasno I never think to go there.

That's good stuff... I still have about 2 glasses worth let in a bottle from last year.

The ER 17 I had last night was not heavily oaked, actually surprised me a little. Was not terribly heavy, even after the Pappy. Now the George T was a little up in your face, but I think it's, what, like 140 proof?

Somewhere around that.... Uncut/Unfiltered. If you hold up the bottle you can see a little barrel sediment it in.

hmm. Interesting. I'll have to give it another whirl. Like I said, I was several good pours in.

Not a fan of Eagle Rare 10 or 17. Has too much of a fruit component that I was not a fan of....made it taste more like a liqueur to me. Tried Van Winkle 12 for the first time and it was fantastic.

I do prefer something on the sweet side, is there anything else y'all would suggest other than ER?

Are you picky? Maker's Mark has a sweetness to it. Basil Hayden's is a bit more expensive but is mild and sweet.

I almost picked up a bottle of Basil Hayden's today. How does Blantons compare to those mentioned?

Has anybody tried Ancient Age 10 Year? After reading a little about it, my understanding is that it comes from Mash bill #2 at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, which produces Blanton's, Elmer T. Lee, and Rock Hill Farms. I'm a big fan of these three bourbons, so I figure I'd like this as well. It's at a great price point (under $20 for a fifth) but it seems that you can only find it in Kentucky (or online). Has anybody seen this in liquor stores in LA?

Stopped by Calandros at lunch... They were still pretty picked over from the holidays. None of the Buffalo Trace whiskeys, etc.. Ended up with a bottle of Basil Hayden's.

I've been looking for it as well, but have been unable to locate it in either LA or MS. If anyone locates it, let me know

Cuban in Shreveport has carried it in the past. I used to buy it - they were the dust covered bottles on the bottom shelf.

Basil Hayden was pretty damn good. Helped get through that shitshow of a football game for sure.
