Find complete rifle, or find a lower and find someone to build it for you. I did my first build with only a screw driver, needle nose pliers and slip joint pliers. They are stupidly simple to put together. I can pt one together in 30 minutes with that same set up now.

Still a rifle, nonetheless.

You would have to be at Academy, Cabelas, Walmart very early when the weapons arrive in order to buy one.
Colts, Windham, Smith & Wesson are good ones, I dont mind Bushmaster for someones first. I personally wouldn't recommend CMMG or DPMS, but others may.
And they are available in 5.56/.223, but that's still a .22 diameter round, just a larger cartridge. I said that to another poster because I reserve the term "high powered" for .30 caliber rounds, that's all.

Most of the brands I listed above at those stores will be below $1k. Finding them in stock will be your biggest issue.

Maybe not in their tracks but it will change their mind really quick.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I have about a dozen guns and have been around them my whole life. I want to get an AR. Want to keep it around $1000 or less.
Would like to get as much quality initially in the rifle to start and accessories can come later. I would like to get into the building aspect later after things calm down.
I see where Precision is going to be selling kits and having a class on building. I was very interested until I saw the price they are going to ask. $1963 for the kit and build class. No thanks

Watch a Youtube video on it and see how easy it is. You can pick your parts in here with the rest of us if you would like. We post deals on a daily basis, just have to be quick on the keyboard with orders. Its really not that difficult, and you can still save money by waiting for deals instead of buying one weapon now and another later.

Cabelas had 3 AR's on the rack Thursday. And I heard the clerk say they had more in the back.

I might end up doing that, and I would appreciate all the help and advice the OB gives.
