If this is true, then you're an observant dude. There were two fights between when he fired Rooney and when he fought Douglas. He won them both, but you could tell he wasn't fighting the same technical style.

I was following boxing pretty well at that time and just had a gut feeling. Going to Japan, Out of sync with training. He was ready to get beat.

Holyfield fought them all, a total of six times, & only lost once.

How old was Larry Holmes when Holyfield fought him?

Tyson annihilated Holmes when Holmes was at least still in his 30s.

It became apparent to those who weren't informed, when they saw that Tyson's cornerman was putting a condom filled with water on Tyson's face to reduce swelling.

he's a slightly less athletic version of Tyson.

I agree. BUT he could ake a hell of a punch and would NOT be intimidated by Tyson. He may not have beat him but would give him a hell of a beating. If there was NO KO, I would take Frazier in a 12 round descion.

This is completely incorrect.

quote:

Lennox Lewis was still an amateur when Tyson was in his prime.

has no bearing that Lewis was the superior fighter. Lewis would have beat him anyday of the week.

When Tyson was lining up chumps like Carl Williams Buster Douglas,Henry Tillman and Alex Stewart. Tyson had to fight Razor Ruddock twice to earn a definitive win and went the distance with him. Lewis was the rising star in HW divison. He took out Ruddock with ease. Don King wanted no part of Lewis. Everyone inside the boxing world was afraid of Lennox.

I tend to think that Tyson would have overwhelmed Frazier just like Foreman did, but in a different way.

And I think that a guy who would have given Tyson a great deal of trouble was a young George Foreman. I have no idea how that fight would play out. I would pay good money to see it.

Dude, are we talking about Tyson in his prime, or Tyson as he was during the Ruddock fights?

Nobody in the boxing world was afraid of Lennox Lewis in 1988 because he wasn't even a goddamn professional yet. Jesus Christ.

To put Lennox Lewis in the same category as Tyson in his prime is preposterous.

Lewis was not as "feared" as you insinuate... he got KO'd by Oliver McCall, for Christ's sake.

Lewis owned the HW division during his tenure, only because there were no others great HWs.

That would have been epic for about three rounds. Foreman would have KILLED him.

Anyone can get caught by an inferior fighter.

He would have been the fighter who could have physically overwhelmed Tyson. But Tyson still might have knocked him out. He was fast enough to catch Foreman with a shot he never saw coming. I can't think a more fascinating fight.

Tyson doesn't get caught by an inferior fighter even two years earlier. CONDOM FILLED WITH WATER.

That's ludicrous. The Tyson excuse train rolls hard.

Yet Lennox would have whooped Tyson in his prime every day of the week

I don't understand why such a big deal is being made about Lewis's range and jab. There are ways to negate that advantage and Tyson could do that better than anyone with the slipping, bob and weave and peekaboo. Tyson was aggressive enough to where Lewis's elbows would stay bent due to Tyson being in his face working the body while stalking him around the ring. Lewis never faced that and that would be his downfall.

Those of you who doubt Tyson's invincibility during the D'Amato/Jacobs era obviously never watched Tyson's fights during that span. After Jimmy Jacobs died, Tyson wasn't the same. He had no guidance, no one to turn to. From that point on, he was sucseptible to being beaten... but before that, no.

Joe Louis became HW champ in June of 1937, he would hold that title until September of 1950.

Just about every fighter that Tyson faced had a longer reach than him. Made no difference -- Tyson's power and speed nullified any reach advantage that his opponent had.

Just wanted to add that this thread is why boxing will always be #1. Probably the most fun sport to talk about
