Player sources say they rejected a last-ditch settlement offer on the bounty case because it required acknowledgement of some culpability. 2-game suspension for Hargrove, 4-game fine for Will Smith and Paul Tagliabue will decide whether he suspends Jonathan Vilma for the rest of the season and Vilma drops defamation suit. Tagliabue's decision expected Tuesday. Scott Fujita already had his suspension reduced to one game. Filed to ESPN w/ @EdWerderESPN. League says they will continue to respect the process.

Keep fighting.

Wow, that settlement sucks.

Why would they offer that?

It doesn't hurt to try I guess. I don't know what they could offer that would get Vilma to drop his suit.

They offered a settlement in an effort to save face, knowing that Tags won't rule in their favor.

I actually agree with this...

Yes, why would the NFL need to "save face" if there is proof that the players are guilty? And now that the players know what was presented they must feel confident enough to reject any settlement.

This whole thing is a sham. We all agree. So you think the NFL's 2 sham witnesses held up under cross examination? Roger Goodell is about to have the worst week of his life.

I wonder if the testimony exonerates everyone and showed that either he or goodell intentionally lied, covered up, obfuscated facts.... if SP has a valid lawsuit.

The token white guy in all of this to keep it from becoming a racial issue.

But they had to know that leaving Vilma up in the air like that was a deal breaker. It's also clear they reeeeally want Vilma's suit to go away. If Vilma pissed that away, he has no court of last resort. With the lawsuit, Vilma still has cards to play and the league is not in control.

I love Will Smith for not taking that settlement. That would have meant he'd be suspended NO games after all this, yet he turned it down on merit. Awesome awesome awesome.

The reason for the settlement offer is to get rid of Vilma's suit, period, because that's one thing Tags can't make go away.

I don't buy into the whole fans having a lawsuit. However, if it did come out that all of this was completely contrived, I wonder if a judge wouldn't hear a lawsuit from the fans.

Smarter legal minds than mine can comment.

Everyone should sue. That's a whole fricking year gone. That's another year not just for the guys in the suit but everyone on that team. A year older is a lot for any football player. The NFL should get lit up at every orifice in a very dry and violent way.

The players have gotten the NFL to try and settle with reducing the suspensions twice. I still say tell them to screw off. What the hell have you got to lose now?
