re: Overall just very disappointed with the lack of creativity on offense

So innovative offense as described by the op equals running trick plays. Texas went out and got an innovative young off cord that runs the above mentioned trick plays with close to equal talent guys and look how that is working out for them.

Offense does not have to be innovative to win in the sec. Miles has proven that. What you do need to win is execution of your plan and passing attack. Lsu lacked that early and we lost. It got better as the season went on and we finally had a decent pass game. Imagine what may be next year if they stick to plan and execute any better. The real diff between us and Alabama is they have a qb they trust and have a passing scheme vs just running passing plays. I feel like at the end of the season we began to develop the same.

It's a horrible idea to give mett a whole new offense going into his senior year. Also this is the off miles wants so that's what we get.

If y'all really what to know what the biggest reason for our passing game success over the last 4 games was, it was that we actually started running more routes. It doesn't take much film work for a good defense to figure out that starting with Auburn and ending with South Carolina, LSU's passing game consisted of about 3 routes. Quick slants, 10 yard outs, and the occasional sluggo. I do realize that the receivers catching the ball actually helped out tremedously, but we also started running more passing routes and our receivers were able to get some separation from the defenders.

Thank you. No clue why it took us this long to do this but the improvement in the passing game was immediate and abundant.

re: Overall just very disappointed with the lack of creativity on offense

The Arky guys were on the radio this morning and had one old columnist on (very good guy and as objective as a home town guy can be) and he thought AR would lose by at least 17. This morning he said LSU played the most vanilla offense he has ever seen, said he couldn't remember one misdirection play, on thing that had killed Arky all year.
I was thinking that during the game, AR was very young at LB and DB and looked like the Saints all year with mis direction. Again, another example where you absolutely question whether they watch game film or not. Tongue in cheek, sure they spends hours looking at film but sure didn't pan out Friday.

Dude does have a point.

I understand what Miles wants to do, and really, there is nothing wrong with this type offense, but we have to make the defense pay for stacking 9 in the box. One of the most frustrating things this season was watching our bad arse RBs continously run up the gut against 9 in the box. We didn't really try making the defense pay for doing that.

Like I said all offseason, this offense needs a deep threat. Someone to make the other team pay dearly for stacking the box against us.

I just read some of your post history. I think you hate Les Miles and his family.

I can't remember a single play this year where I said, "wow brilliant play call!" How about a halfback pass, a flee flicker, a hook and latter, a Statue of Liberty?

And to top it off, your idea of a "creative" offense are trick plays?

Ouch.

The offense is pretty stale.

I'm going to guess it had to do with being able to protect the QB. When the O-line plays well in pass pro, we're able to run more routes, when they don't you are pretty limited to what routes you can run.

The offense this year was only as good as it's line.

I think the light bulb finally came on in the heads of our WRs in terms of how to run the routes. And getting a TE who can catch into the mix helped.

I'll take execution over creativity any day. The difference between the good offensive games and the bad ones wasn't play calling. The same plays that only put up 200 yards against Florida were the plays that put up 440 against Alabama.

No I saw a big difference as the year went along. That is my point. We could not protect the qb early so we ran a lot of one or two receiver routes. I equate this to just running random passing plays just for the sake of it.

Later in the season I think we went to more or an overall scheme of multiple receivers and taking advantage of match ups. That is what we need to focus on not a new off cord. If Stud continues to devise schemes that take advantage of match ups and the execution is their then the passing game can develop into exactly what lsu needs.

To clarify I say Alabama runs a passing scheme and to begin the season lsu ran random passing plays. To end the season we developed more of a scheme and I hope that continues to develop.

production is all that matters. and i don't think that's what he's talking about at all. too many times, our play calling goes into super conservative mode; all GOOD teams do this but we do this so often defenses plan for it and we can't run the damn ball against 8 man fronts in those situations. it's like we need short yardage and we never do anything but run up the middle in that situation. WE HAVE TOO MANY TENDENCIES and they are highly predictable. Stanford and Notre Dame run the same offense with the same plays we do. there are other successful teams that do it too. we need to not always run the same damn play in certain situations. i'm not "creativity" is the right word because some of the yahoos on here will never be satisfied until we run oregons offense but we NEED TO EXAMINE OUR TENDENCIES this offseason if we want a trip back to the NC.

Florida went out and made a great hire at offensive coordinator.

Have you seen Florida's offense?

They're ranked 12th in the SEC. The only teams in the conference with offenses worse than Florida? .. Kentucky and Auburn.

I do agree about our offense, though. It's terrible. Not creative at all, you can easily predict every play without any previous knowledge about the team.

No stats to support this but it just seemed like we had a different tack vs Bama than with UF. As a minimum I'm pretty sure we used Hill more vs Bama.

As for the OP not recalling any "brilliant" play calls I think this is overstatement. There were some. Not many, but some.

My overarching concerns/points:
a) It took 8 games into the season before our O seemed to find its groove. That's too long. I think this goes back to '08 and Les not willing to trust things to the O until he has to.
b) Our O struggled in the RZ and in points territory all year.
c) I for one am perplexed how a team like OM could field a more proficient O than us with a 1st ye coach, a QB fresh out of JC, and by most indications a talent level below ours. Can anyone explain this?
d) Les's approach is "I don't have to take risks on O when I have a great D and ST's" when it should be "I can afford to take some risks on O because I have a great D and ST's."
e) A little bit more proficiency on O and we're playing this Saturday.

Brando and Steve Beurline (sp?) sure had trouble predicting our third down pass at the end of the Arkansas game to ODB.

Look at the games we played well offensively vs. the game we played sub par. There is one major difference, home vs away.

Young guys will struggle on the road, especially young o-line and first time starter at QB. And those were the 2 positions that really hampered our offensive production on the road.

There are about a billion different ways to run inside zone, outside zone, power, etc. and we don't. We lack creativity.

No new wrinkles, motions, etc. Anything to give defenses different looks to get away from tendencies. More of that would be good.

what is your experience evaluating variation or the addition or ommission of wrinkles in an offensive play? Bc if it's simply watching it from a novice eye, all the plays look the same. But I'm sure there's adjustments and variation the untrained eye can see, especially observing high levels of just about any discipline.
