I have a mutt and I currently feed it Iams. In getting a full breed chocolate lab for the kids as a Christmas present and I was wondering what the best food was for a dog like this. I want it to reach its fullest potential. TIA

My dad is a vet and he's always liked Purina. I forget the exact type, but he likes the Purina diet mix. It keeps them slim but makes them shite more, so be weary of that if you choose it.

I'm somewhat ashamed of this, but I think I've become a dog food snob . Dogs have very simple stomachs and there are a ton of shitty brands out there. I feed my great dane Taste of the Wild wetlands formula, and he's doing great on it. Check out dogfoodadvisor.com and any food with a 4 or 5 star rating should be good for your dog.

ETA: I think you should check out Taste of the Wild, Blue Buffalo, Acana, Canidae, Innova, and Orijen. Pick the brand that is sold in your area and fits your price range.

Diamond naturals. 4 star food with no wheat soy or corn. One of my dogs has a skin allergy so i swapped to that from pro plan. He looks great now.

Pedigree. Used to go with IAMS.
That's for the chocolate lab and the GSP.

The black lab mix gets Blue Buffalo Duck and Potato...she has food allergies and duck/turkey is the only thing she can eat regularly and not throw it back up. Found out...Lamb isn't so hypoallergenic after all.

I went to the dog food adviser link when I got my yellow lab a couple of months ago. I am using the Blue Buffalo Puppy. You can find it at PetSmart and PetCo.

When I was in college I could get chicken for free, so boiled chicken and rice about half and half. Now I like Purina pro plan It's the one in the red bag if that helps, dogs seem to do good on it and it's reasonably priced has good ingredients. During deer season they get deer meat scraps if we kill anything.
