re: In your lifetime, the first HUGE recruit that impacted you

Honestly, when Russell Shepard came in-- it got the initial interest and a friend of mine committed to LSU. got me even more into it.

My first big letdown was when Billy Cannon , Jr. went to A & M...I mean the son of LSU's only Heisman winner was going elsewhere?????????

Rephrase the question. Maybe say which recruit were you most impressed with?

I remember Booty/Manning, but we were busy winning state 2 of 3 years in BB to notice (Peyton flubbed a grounder at SS at our house in State).

Then you must have went to Sacred Heart and coached by Scott Carter.

The first one I can remember following the announcement was Marquise Hill. I remember seeing it on the news in North La, I was all in with the Spears, Hill, Clayton, Wilkerson and whitworth class.

Russell Sheppard no doubt,
I really thought he wound win multiple heismans.
No Offense of player will ever win the Heisman with Les Miles's head coach a running back could have a chance but miles is always can have six of them and there all good no individual single player offensively will ever win the Heisman at LSU again! As long as miles is coach

I think the first recruiting buzz I remember is when Harvey Williams was a "lock" for A&M and then chose LSU (1986)... Pissing everyone off in Texas with his choice and the way he did it...

After that I caught the bug... Back then you had to follow recruiting through the radio w/the experts on talk radio and the few publications that came out regularly... The internet wasn't an option quite yet.

I remember the Harvey Williams ordeal. A&M got us back with Bucky Richardson though

I'll bite:

In HS: Was in same district as Jerrell Powe and got to watch him progress. I had never seen a kid be such a beast. Best night was when Hattiesburg took down Wayne County at No. 1. He also later happened to be the first kid I interviewed for the Reveille when I got to LSU.

In college: Russell Shepard. I tracked a lot of his career and what he was doing to recruit kids, and it wasn't just good content, but it enamored me how involved he was beyond just his talents.

Of all time: Willie Williams. What's understood obviously does not need to be explained.

And save the Ron Brooks Chase bank jokes...

Cecil Collins. He was and still is the best high school football player I have ever seen...live or on video. I was a Freshman at DeRidder when he was a Senior at Leesville and they were our rivals. We had to play them twice that year...during the regular season and in the playoffs. He killed us!

I can let Ron Brooks's actual height slide, but I cant believe you left out the recruitment circus that surrounded Evan Points at Him class of 2007.

Winntiger,

I actually know the current whereabouts of Points at Him. Does work for Halliburton..

The recruitment of Evan Points at Him and Mister Jones were stuff of legends..

Some great posts in here. Like threads like this.

While Ronald Curry was the recruit that got me hooked, no class will ever be more special to me than the Spears/Clayton group. That group began the run we're on now, the golden age of LSU football, and for that reason, those guys will always be special to me. I don't think it was the best class we've had since but it is the most important class in LSU history imo.

Like a few of the other posters, I recall Harvey Williams. Most thought he was headed for A&M, and he made the surprising signing day announcement that he was going to be a Tiger. But there were others to follow--I recall Garry James early in his recruitment saying he was going out of state, only to sign with LSU and to be joined by Dalton Hilliard. By that time, I was following it regularly, usually reading Tiger Rag, other print coverage & radio coverage.
