I second the Brian Gavin suggestion. I did my research on Pricescope and thetruthaboutdiamonds before making my purchase last month. Luckily, Brian Gavin's office is in Houston and I was able to sit down with him and get an "education". There is nowhere else I would ever buy a diamond. Excellent value for superb stones. Find a few that you like online and run them by Ira at truthaboutdiamonds via email. He'll let you know if you're getting a square deal and give you suggestions. I ended up spending twice as much as my initial budget, so there's that.

Must have inherited his cash. No way a self-made baller spends that kind of bank on a ring.

I'm not sure where you live, but here in New Orleans my guy is Robert Normann. He's down on Gravier St. He has a nice deal where you can trade your diamond back in towards the purchase of an upgrade in the future.

Thanks for all the recommendations on James Allen and TruthaboutDiamonds. Never been to either one of those sites until now. As for the few of you that suggested I wait till after I get out of professional school... that's really not an option. I'll be 28 by the time that happens.

LINK / ^worked out great for me. Got mine from B2C Jewelers. You get an additional discount if you go through this search engine I linked above. You have to pay by wire though. They say they accept other forms of payment, but I've read elsewhere (and sort of experienced first hand) that they slow things way down if you don't.

Perfect age to wait until. You and especially her will change a lot between now and then.

Excuse my ignorance, but as long as the ring is flawless to the human eye, why is it important to get the best clarity, cut, etc?? I know a nicer diamond will hold its value and increase in value better but it's not like I would be returning the thing and she sure as hell wont be looking at it under a microscope. I feel like a woman would be happier with a bigger diampnd that has "flaws" that cant be seen by the human eye than a flawless smaller diamond

Bought my fiancé's ring from Anton's last month. Took a good friend with me who used to work in the industry and let him take care of most of the negotiations. Ended up paying $5,300 in cash for a ring that appraised for a little under 9k. And obviously she said yes when I asked this past weekend.

Almost everyone had a budget, the key is getting the most for your money that fits your priorities. Let us look at it like a car. What is the difference in a Dodge and a Porsche? Both are cars. In this example you can clearly see that one is more expensive and built to a higher quality. How about a Camry and a Corolla, much closer but still different. If you could get a Camry for a Corolla price that would be great, how about the fact that without research you will probably pay a Camry price for a Corolla...

Rather than spend all the money up front, would your sister be into allowing you finance the ring?
