Wild Horses in the US

Inspired by the dumbass donkey thread. My understanding of horses is they are high-maintenance. They need shoed, and even then their feet go bad. If they eat too rich a diet the founder and get colic an shite. So how can all these wild herds in the west survive?

I guess the same way a coyote can survive but a pomeranian can't

I'm sure a wild stang is significantly tougher than your average pampered quarter horse.
I think everybody has dreamed of throwing a saddle on a wild arse horse and riding it off into the sunset

Probably similar to how domesticated dogs are pansies, but wolves and coyotes can survive the wild.

Probably don't have the same life expectancy as a doctored horse, but they be livin'...
Like the dog/coyote example... I'm sure coyotes get heartworms, but they can live for years with them.

Had a bunch of them at Fort Polk when I was stationed there. They would feed pretty close to our firing point, but would leave the area quickly once the howitzers went boom.

You can camp with and get very close to the wild ponies at Grayson Highlands State Park in VA. It's gorgeous there. You can hike a section of the AT while you're at it.

I was just about to post about all the wild horses in Vernon Parish. Sounds like a lie - I wouldn't haven't believed it myself if I hadn't seen them 4 or 5 times with my own eyes.

There is a population of them just north of Catahoula Lake too. A place I used to hunt had a couple on it. These were wild as hell. Lived in the swamp like deer. Beautiful healthy horses though.

Hoses feet will naturally wear down in the proper spots when in the wild. Thinly when penned up in smaller pastures and they don't have to walk 10-15 miles a day for food and water the feet need shodding.
Normally they starve, very seldom is their diet too rich in Nevada.

Even horses in a 100 acre pasture will need less hoof trimming that one in stalls. More so in rocky areas but even in the south.

They do just fine in the wild if they have a decent food supply. My favorite place in Georgia is Cumberland Island which is a great place to camp (and hunt hogs but that's a different story). It used to be populated and has a pretty large wild horse population that is stable (no joke intended). Here are a couple of the wild horses in front of what was a Carnegie mansion.

Never heard that. Have seen horse shite on trail many times, but assumed it was lawbreakers riding on it. Horses are forbidden, as are 4 wheelers, but people violate all day long.
Speaking of lawbreaking, I got a ticket for traveling off a forest service road. I parked on a powerline ROW and lawdog got pissy, gave me a $175 ticket. I tried to get it fixed but those nazi bastards refused. Sucks to suck.

Whats really cool is there is a specific pack of wild horses in montana whose lineage can be traced to the horses the spaniards brought to america waaaaaaay back when..... In fact, the word mustang comes from the spanish word mesteno, which means "stray".
