Home Defense Rookie Here. Have a couple questions.

I have a 12 gauge Beretta 686 Onyx pro, obviously not the best for home defense, but it is all I have.
Preface: I know how to use the gun well, not a ringer by any means but have had it and used it for about 5 years.
I now live uptown in a house with a friend, no kids or anything, closer to some sketchy areas then I have ever been.
Questions I have.
Where should I keep it, under my bed, behind my desk?
Do I keep the sleeve on?
Should I keep it loaded or just have ammo close by? I have never seen a gun go off by falling or something, but I am sure it is possible.
I have some Remington #1 buck shot for ammo.
I am sorry if we have discussed this before, I couldn't find a good thread by google search.
I appreciate any help, thanks.

Sleep with it in the bed with you

Load it! You can leave that gun loaded for 10 years and it won't go off by itself.

I'd keep it loaded. One buckshot, one slug

thanks y'all, I just needed to make sure I was doing it the safest most effective way.
I will load it, and get some slugs. One slug and one buckshot alternate?
ETA: that has been answered now too. thanks

I'd keep it loaded and standing up alongside your bed post. (assuming you don't have kids)
You can buy this for $200 from Academy.

Nothing more intimidating then hearing that pump put one in the chamber. I think thats why I'm so partial to pumps.

I keep a shell chambered. I think the sound of the first shot is more intimidating.

My old 12 sits in that little gap between the box spring and the frame. Always loaded.

Slugs on top, 00 buck on bottom. Load, leaning in the corner of your room closest to the bed.

I've always thought the safety going "click" was the most intimidating.

Slugs are overrated for HD IMO

Not to get into a ballistics debate, but I'd imagine you'd really have to worry about wall penetration with slugs in a HD situation as well. Especially if you have kids, or live in an apartment.
