No, it wouldn't make sense. I see no way to read this episode as if the mother is now dead. He's just saying that if you love someone, you wish you had as much time with them as possible, even those 45 days. Or 45 seconds.

I can't believe this was such a hard thing to figure out. Additionally, how the hell is this a filler episode? It moved the ball thematically forward. It tethered the audience's relationship to Ted to create his future feelings towards the mother and have them retroactively apply.

It's about love. It stripped away the quirk and got to the core. It's about Ted's love for his wife and his family.

I'm with you.

I thought it was a good episode. Not the best, but certainly not a terrible filler episode. Filler isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's almost inevitable at this point. The plot is in neutral until the wedding.

I don't get the "mother is dead" theory. I took it like Baloo said. And that with his friends being distracted by their baby and their wedding, those 45 days until he met his wife were his lowest days. And he would give anything to have had her during those 45 days.

I loved this episode. All the complaints I'm reading is about how it's a filler episode well what the frick do you expect at this point? With a set plot (with the ending of the plot being the show's title) it's kinda hard to digress from what they have now. Just enjoy the show for what it is.

At this point, i have no problem with filler episodes because they have a set time they are going to do things. The past 3-5 episodes have been pure filler but ive loved them because they were funny and a lot of them found a way to showcase classic Barney.

I have no problem with the filler, just own it for what it is. Dont give me that crap ending trying to make it seem like something deep just happened (unless the dead mother theory is right, then it makes sense) when in reality nothing happened and it wasnt that funny.

I thought it was really good too. Marshall was hillarious. They needed a funny episode of them just hanging out at the bar. And if you're complaining about filler episodes, just get ready to have a sandy vag for the next 6 weeks or so. We know what's happening at the finale. The plot has been advanced as far as it will be this season. Every episode until then will be filler. Hopefully they will be funny, like tonight.

Pretty solid. The writing with the multiple Barneys and Teds and all that was pretty brilliant if you think of it. That's not easy to create, film and edit.

And to those that keep saying shite about "filler episode"...its a sitcom, not a Shakespearean production or something. Every episode is supposed to be just that, a situational comedy.
This isn't Lost or some other grandiose or convoluted plotted drama.

Why couldn't he ask 20 years from now Ted who his wife was when he showed the wedding ring??

Probably because that was all in Teds head, and he doesnt know who it is.

I liked last nights ep, and there is no way Teds wife is dead.

I mean, the mother "could" be dead because anything is possible. But I don't see how you read that episode that way. It was about love. He was talking about being lonely, but he was just focusing on the things he didn't have instead of the things he had -- particularly his good friends. He should have gone to be with them. but given the choice, he would go to her, because that was the one thing he was truly missing at the time.

It's a variation of Billy Crystal's line, "When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."

Oh, and the episode was funny. Robin's note in the bathroom ruled.

I was so expecting the last short scene to start off with a close up of Ted sitting lonely and looking sad, and then the camera slowly pans out to Robots vs Wrestlers Legends. That would have been hilarious.

That's how I took it as well.

I liked the episode, even though it was pretty weird. I agree with WS that the whole 20 years/20 minutes future Barney and Ted thing was done really well...I was thinking that the whole time, how well it was shot and how good it looked. I was glad it all ended up being in Ted's head though, because that made the future 'selves make sense.

As much as I think I like the "she's dead" angle, I definitely took the ending to mean that Bob Saget knows that they don't meet for another 45 days, so if he could go back in time (which fits within the episode with the time travel), he'd immediately go meet his wife 45 days sooner. Even if it meant getting punched out by her then-boyfriend. I think the "dead wife" theories kinda make sense, but in no way did I ever think that's what they were telling us. To me it was just Ted's way of saying that if he had control of the situation, he'd have met his wife that much sooner because he loves her so much that getting an extra 45 days with her would be awesome. Also, since it was all in Ted's head, he definitely tells her that he's gonna love her "for the rest of my life." So if we're trying to super read into things, if she was dead wouldn't he have likely said "for the rest of your life"?

Why the hell is the next episode not airing till April 15th? I hate when they go multiple weeks between new episodes.

I just took it as meaning that he knows he won't meet her for 45 days and his life is pretty miserable right now so if he could go back in time he would start the rest of his life 45 days earlier. I really don't think there's a deeper darker meaning than that.

That's all he meant.

And this was a good episode, and an essential one. I don't understand how anyone couldn't get that.

Ted needed to hit rock bottom, to come to some kind of catharsis, and be fully ready to meet the mother. I think he's almost there.

Apparently any episode that doesn't show the face of the mother is a filler

I thought it was a good episode. It really showed what Ted is going through emotionally, and wasn't just a bunch of random crap thrown together.

You guys jumped on the filler comments but skipped over my explanation that i dont care about filler, i expect it, and the past few episodes have been filler and have been awesome

Just dont give me a filler episode with a bs ending trying to make it seem like something actually happened to move the plot forward when in fact literally nothing actually happened in the episode.

But stuff did happen, that's our point. I've been in the "I don't care who the mother is" camp. I just don't. It's just a construct of the show to tell stories about a bunch of friends. However, the last five minutes of this episode made me, for the first time since Season 1, made me care who the Mother is. It was an emotionally moving scene, and perhaps the best bit of acting by Ted in the series.

Also, the scene with the coat check girl's two futures in the booth was pretty critical to a reading of the series. It's one of the first times he chose NOT to chase after Random Girl X since the show started. But this episode emphatically put a flag down that this moment is the beginning of the end. They practically rang a bell to call the final lap.
