I heard a substation caught on fire (saw on a FB group)
Some in Mid city and CBD are out.
I felt bad for out neighbors, we live in a eight house cul-de sac, and only three of us are on one transformer, and the other five on a separate one. Mines been on since last night, Entergy is in my neighbor's yard now with a truck.

12,000 people in the CBD and Uptown. BOOM! Outage.

So, it's acceptable to just maintain the lowly status quo? Everytime this happens, there are reports about how out-of-state electrical workers think our electrical grid is out of the stone age and terrible. I know nothing about electrics, but I had 3 poles in my neighborhood leaning before the storm even hit. The system just looks antiquated, old, and primitive.

no, I don't think so, just giving you their reason not to...money. Steel poles can fail too.
I work as a consulting electrical engineer. Power distribution pole design is among the things I've done.
The National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) only requires the poles (in Louisiana) to be rated to withstand 60MPH winds. Only if the pole is 60ft or taller does it need to factor in extreme wind and extreme ice with concurrent wind loading cases.

In my experience, the out of state workers aren't always the best judges of...anything.

The problem is the grid set up. Neighbors got power back wednesday night, i got it back saturday afternoon.
Just doesnt make a lot of sense to me.

With all the bitching for 3 days or 4 days of power outage, what would be an acceptable time frame to restore power after a major hurricane?

Apparently, it's gotta be done before the first food stamp distribution site is opened. At that point those in the less robust parishes can get on to fist fighting in line for food stamps.

so you'd rather just one radial feed, where it's all or nothing? cause that would mean you'd both be out until the later date

I live approximately 2 miles from the Entergy office in Labadieville and can say that these people have been working their asses off. I have a few friends that work for Entergy and know that they have been working 16 hour shifts during this time of need. Most of the problems for this storm compared to Gustav is that this storm did not have huge trees knocking out huge areas of service. It's taking more time to assess than anything.

A U.S. Department of Energy official from the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability praised Entergy Corporation for its response to Hurricane Isaac after completing a preliminary inspection of the damage and restoration work in Louisiana.

I'm sure elprez will be excited to hear that he's received an award from such an unbiased authority on efficiency.

This wont be the last award they win for this restoration, I promise.
But I fully expect the amateur meterologists/electrical engineers of south Louisiana to find all kinds of excuses as to why they are not legit. It's ok. It just further illustrates my point that giving more information to a population that either doesn't understand it, doesn't want to understand it, or both, is not always a good thing. It's like trying to explain LSU's offensive performance vs North Texas to the Rant.
But, whatever floats your boat.

What I don't understand is how people can call themselves Republicans, and supposed to be pro-business, but jump at the first opportunity to lambast the only Fortune 500 company, and one of the biggest employers in the state.
Posted on 9/6/12 at 9:37 pm to bdevill
Because they just had a house with no power for several days while Demco customers in the same areas never lost power or had minimal outages? Is that a reason? That Fortune 500 rating means abaolutely dick when customers are literally left in the dark due to the incompetence of a company who is supposed to be a leader in this sector across the country.

So you guys think that entergy didn't want your power turned on? Btw entergy makes money when you buy the power. I appreciate you guys paying your bills btw

I think legitimate issue is the condition of the infrastructure that must endure the storm. How antiquated or deteriorated are the poles and connections? How vigorously is the vegetation control program carried out and how much opposition is there on the part of preservationist who don't want trees touched at all? How much should be spent to "harden" and/or modernize the system so that it can withstand storms?
I still maintain that one issue had to do with communication to the public. I have not doubt that Entergy employees worked hard to restore power, but the information coming from the talking heads, Rice and others, was not what is should have been, imo. It also pissed me the frick off when Rice said that he understood that customers wanted their "creature comforts" restored.
