If I'm vilma, I take a reduced suspension........if they reduce Payton, Vitt, and looms.

Look at the precedent this is setting. Now anytime a player is suspended they can go file a civil suit against Roger and get it reduced. That is what the NFL is risking by offering this deal.

I've been thinking about this, too.

It's hard to understand what the NFL's thought process is here.

Payton and Loomis are not part of the legal proceedings that are currently active in federal court. A source speculated that if the federal judge rules in favor of the players then Benson could push for Goodell to consider a reduction in Payton's suspension. A team source downplayed that scenario.

This is what I've been waiting for!!!

At the end of the day, I don't think the NFL truly cares about the player suspensions. They'd reduce the suspensions in order to avoid the lawsuits and scrutiny it would bring. In their eyes as long as they keep Payton suspended for a year, they can stand on their pedestal and say they punished those responsible. Payton will be the one everyone remembers from this whole deal years from now. Vilma will be forgotten.

While sources said league attorneys have urged Goodell to offer reductions in the suspensions as a settlement, a league official reiterated Goodell's position that if the players had participated fully in the appeals process, the commissioner may have reduced the penalties as he has with other players who have been disciplined in other cases.

This is dumb and why it's retarded to have the same person that dishes out the punishment also be the same person that hears the appeals. Why issue a punishment if you would later reduce it with an appeal? Dumb shite.

Vilma was the one of the cover of freaking Sports Illustrated Bounty issue. If he gets the suspension overturned because it's deemed BS in court he will be much more than a footnote. Dude may get a statue in the Player's Association offices for turning back the commissioner run wild on power.

Understood, I'm saying if he takes the deal and is suspended 8 games then he will serve his time and eventually be forgotten in five years; while Payton becomes the face of Bountygate, because he actually sat out the whole year.

If Goodell's even thinking about a settlement, its for a reason. I say frick him, see you in court.

this. for someone who said he had more than enough evidence to rightfully suspend players why is a settlement being offered? Goodell is about to get dp'd in court and is trying to save face by offering a settlement to say both sides won.

you only offer a settlement when you know they are going to benefit regardless of the situation

Can we think about this move in terms of Goodell's recent interview?
Goodell just said that he thinks "the Saints are ready to move on."

Now, he's offering kind of a shitty settlement offer to Vilma.
So, if Vilma doesn't agree to the settlement, he'll be prolonging this whole business.
Therefore, in light of Goodell's words, it will seem like the Saints are not actually trying to move on; rather, they are being stubborn.
