Allegedly fed up with a dog that often wandered into his girlfriend's back yard and growled at him, a St. Bernard Parish man was arrested Sunday evening for fatally shooting the pit bull with a 12-gauge shotgun, Sheriff James Pohlmann said Monday. Russell Banks Jr., 20, 2920 Acorn Drive, Violet, was booked with cruelty to an animal and illegal discharge of a weapon after the 5:30 p.m. shooting in the back yard of 2326 Licciardi Lane, Violet, the sheriff said.
Banks told Deputy Sheriff Daniel Carreras that he heard barking in the back yard and saw the dog standing over the grave where Banks' deceased dog is buried. Banks claimed the dog growled at him, according to a Sheriff's Office press release.
Banks went inside, got his 12-gauge shotgun, and came out and shot the dog in its side. The wounded dog apparently walked back into its own yard at 2400 Licciardi Lane before it died, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Banks was being held on Monday in St. Bernard Parish Prison in lieu of a $26,000 bond.
Appropriate bond?

He looks like he could be close kin to Jordan Jefferson. If this is fact, throw away the key.

But a bad shot

That's ridiculous. Feared for his life and shot the dude. Seems justified to me.

His fault for not killing it dead
I've always though controversial dog shootings should be handled on a personal level rather than a legal one, but that's just me.

If a pit bull comes in my yard and growls at me he too will be introduced to some lead via my 12 gauge.

Any dog comes in my yard and growls will meet the same fate. And I wouldn't blame anyone if my dog did the same.

Especially a pit! It ain't like your neighbors weenie dog squeezed through the gate and grew a wild hair.

Thats why he hit behind the head! Waits too long to pull the trigger.

He should not have gone to jail or even been ticketed. The dog owner should be ticketed for ignoring the leash law.

Something about that story doesnt add up. Since when did it become illegal to defend yourself from a violent animal?

This is such bull shite, what if it was a poisonous snake? Would that be cruelty to animals?

Not trying to start a pit bull debate because this wouldn't an issue if it was another breed, but defending himself against a violent animal???
Does this dog have a history of violence? Growling <> violent. Also did you miss this part?

If that would have been a person, it would be murder. We was not in danger once he went inside. He did not have to go back outside. The smart solution was to call animal control.
Obviously the dog's owner is at fault, but that does not justify what he did.

I think that's bullshite IMO. The hell I can't go outside in my own yard. I'm not saying this was justified or not, I wasn't there. But if a pit continuously came in my yard, I would call the authorities the first time. Happens again, I'm pumping it full of lead. I have kids.

I cant stand bunny huging libs that make laws like this.
Yea, but it wasnt it was a dog that shouldnt have been there. If it would have been a 3 yr old instead of a 20 yr old, the 3 yr old could have been killed if you want to start making up shite.
