I have some high dollar ones we use during hunting season. I got a wife and two girls that hunt and virtually no cell signal on our land. bout 3/4 of a mile is as good as it gets in the river bottoms. Good for that type of stuff, but useless otherwise.

GMRS frequencies do not play well with pine trees. The diameter of a typical pine needle is about the same diameter as a GMRS signal pulse.

Range is going to be a factor of wattage and antenna length. Don't pay attention to advertised "range". Find out the wattage. Many of them are .5 watt. I think 2 is the max.

I have a good 2-watt set (Midland) and they only get about a half mile in Houston (trees, houses, and lots of ambient "noise").

Out in New Mexico, they reach at least 20 miles line of sight.

That's a solar powered battery charger at the bottom in case y'all are worried about electronics and batteries.

Just curious, how do you like that Gerber Apocalypse kit? I really just want that hatchet and gator hook deal...do you feel like it was worth the money? Put em to use at all?

I really just want to find: a good hatchet and good e tool.

20 waterproof matches ($2.50) just to have in addition to my flint striker
1500 yards of 10lb test monofilament fishing line ($7.00)
A few 'hot hands' hand and feet warmers $0.99 each

Just curious. What's the deal with handwarmers? They are non-resuable and I don't see that being the difference between life or death. Start a fire and problem solved right?

Just a small convenience since they are tiny and very light weight...and if for some reason a fire cannot be started. They take up basically zero room so having them vs not having them is pretty much the same.

Mine is about 50lbs. I can tote it miles without difficulty. The girls and wife's bags are about 35 although my oldest can carry more now. She's stout as hell.
