My kid is 7 and is wanting to start drumming. I'm a guitar player and have been in bands, so I have a little knowledge of drum kits, but I am not an expert. I've looked at a few kits but was just looking for any advice anyone could give me.

He's a pretty talented kid and can already ID whole, quarter, 8th notes, ect... and can do some rudiments on a drum pad just from youtube vids.

Pretty bummed about him not wanting to play guitar. But I'd like to get him a good kit that'll re-sale if he changes his mind.

Thanks for all of the help.

A Gretsch Catalina Club kit can be had for close to $600 new, but it has decent resale being such a compact set.

He's 7. Get him a Sunlite. If his interest stays, you can upgrade to something better.

Just checked out their site. I've never heard of the company. I'll try and find a dealer around here. A good cheap set would be nice but I don't want to be stuck with it if he loses interest.

Can't go wrong with a 5 piece Pearl starter drum set.

If you want to retain your sanity buy him a Roland or Yamaha electronic kit and a pair of headphones. Also will be easy to sell on Ebay and ship if he loses interest.

electronic kit is how my son learned. Much easier investment than a whole set. He did not lose interest but the guy that was giving him lessons moved away.

I don't think you should learn on an electronic drumset IMO

Son practiced on the regular set at our church whenever he wanted and the electronic one at home. As a single mom it was the best I could do. I know nothing about music though.

Mapex is also a good starter kit. A five pice will probably run a little higher than your budget. Save money on the hardware and cymbals. If he takes to it, upgrade hardware and cymbals. If not, you can resell pretty easily.

Also- electric is not the way to learn.

Check with your drummer friends. I was given my youngest son's first drum set - a friend who plays the drums for a living had a couple of old sets and gave me one.

I'm not a fan of electric sets. We have the room and the noise factor doesn't bother me as I've killed my hearing in bands. I've checked out the Pearl starter kits so it's good to see that mentioned.

Thanks for the info and anymore input would be awesome.
