Spain would rather play six world-class midfielders over five and one very average striker.

Yeah, he was.
I have really no other way to explain than he simply lost his great shooting ability.
If this was the Torres from three or so years ago, then he would have definitely started today FWIW.

But if they do choose to start that one average striker, no way it should be friggin Negredo. I have a feeling Torres will start the final.

Exactly. The tactical 4-6-0 is more because Torres has been so bad recently. He simply hasn't been finishing chances for over two years now.

What do you know about a striker-less formation?

So far, Spain's version is more like molasses than champagne.

This. But it's hard to believe Del Bosque doesn't have anyone he is comfortable playing up top - Llorente, Negredo, Soldato, etc.

On a different note who's the hottie in your sig pic?

As much as it pains me to say it, he's simply not the same player he used to be.

He always fit like a square peg to a round hole with Spain. He isn't the type of player is involved in intricate build-up play. He's a channel running, off the shoulder poacher who is good 1v1. Villa was always better than he was at the international level because of his ability to link play AND score, which makes him that much more valuable. Spain look toothless for the most part because of the absence of Villa, not Torres.
It's also interesting to note that for the first time in a long while, Spain do not have a young star striker they can turn to to bring energy and pace from the bench. Looking back at their previous major tournament squads, this is one of the oldest, even without Puyol. Off hand, I can't think of any promising young Spanish striker.
