I mean it is one.. it's the 4th biggest city and the 5th biggest metro area in the country. But it seems like it isn't considered one. Is that because of its proximity to DFW.. or because the teams aren't any good? You don't see many players lining up to play in Houston. The Dwight thread sparked this.

How do you define this? It is the ONLY city in American with dedicated major league football, basketball, baseball, and soccer facilities.

This trend just started the last two or three years. McGrady was a big time player. Melo had Houston on his short list. Dwight just wants to have full controll. He got his coach and GM fired and that still wasnt good enough.

Astros made it to the World Series in 2005

Rockets had McGrady/Yao recently and historically are better than most

Texans continue to improve as a franchise

Dynamo pack the house

Just as many Cowboys, Saints, and Steelers fans in Houston as Texans. Plus a lot of people just don't give a shite about the sports teams.

Its actually like 10th in metro market. The city is bigger, becasue it has expansive annexation powers that most cities do not.

I suspect at least part of Howard not wanting to come here is because the team is no good. If you are going to play for a fringe playoff team, might as well stay with Orlando.

lot of bandwagon fans too.

seems like in LA, New York, Chicago being around, apart of, invested, making appearances at the sporting events is the cool thing to do. You don't see that with Houston teams and Houston celebrities all that often.

Oil/Gas industry brings in a ton of outsiders or non Houstonians who could give a frick about Houston sports.

For the first year I couldn't even listen to Houston Sports radio because I didn't give two shits about the shitty Houston teams.

Now I find enjoyment in going to Minute Maid, buying a $7 standing ticket, ending up on the 3rd baseline by the 5th inning. Drinking beers, eating hotdogs, and watching other teams.

I go to company and coworkers tailgate parties out at Reliant. Really good time. Not Tiger Stadium, but still fun.

I have grown to like this young Rockets team.
Fun to watch regardless of w/l. they try hard night in and night out for McHale. I also go to watch them play the Heat, Lakers, Bulls, Hornets, etc.

It is weird that Houston isn't considered a big city market...doesn't help the perception that it's stuck in Texas which doesn't have a "part of us" perception...and that 30% of the population has English as a second-language.

No data present, but IMO I'd say NYC, LA, Chicago, DFW, Boston, Philadelphia, and Miami are all bigger sports markets. Houston is second tier with ATL, Denver, Phoenix, Bay Area, etc.

Hopefully that trend will change. Houston has great facilities, two really competitive teams (Texans/Rockets) and hopefully the Astros pick up steam with the move to the AL West. I know Houston put a bid in for the 2012 Olympics years back. That would've done a lot for the city as far as a sports market.

I would venture to say that the reason Houston isn't considered a big sports market, even though they are population wise, is because they are all 'new' teams. The Rockets don't fall in this category because they have had well known players and have won championships and have been around for awhile.

The Texans are a relatively new team, plus the Oilers were loved so it took some time to get over them. The Astros are a lot like the Rangers, never could get a huge following until recently, except the Astros weren't able to keep up their success which killed their teams popularity.

Tradition has a lot to do with a perception of a 'big market'. The amount of money spent on a team and the players also give a feel that its a big market team. Up to about a couple of years ago, the Rangers were considered a 'small market' team. That is a couple of reasons why Boston is considered a big market, although they do branch out to most of New England. Plus, the more bandwagon fans there are all over the country makes it seem like a big market team.

I do think the perception of Houston is changing as their teams get bigger and more successful.

it is a big market for advertising considerations.

for the purposes of selecting a home base, it has no 'bohemian' culture. It is less attractive to players because its a boring redneck oil town.
NYC has bohemians and a bohemian culture and a black music culture.
Chicago has a bohemian culture and a black music culture.
L.A. has movie stars and access to Hollywood.

So... Houston is a big market but finishes out of the money when you are talking about great cities to live in and enjoy.
Chicago and NYC have better opera, better symphony, better jazz, and lots of legitimate theatre and the best dance companies. Players may not care about all that but their wives do.

One more thing, Houston is IMMENSE so it has that same down side as LA, Chicago and NYC have.

According to MLB, the Astros are a big market team (even if they aren't fielding big league talent). In 2014, they will no longer receive the revenue sharing that they have been getting -- thanks to the new collective bargaining agreement. The will be lumped in with the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, etc.
