Choosing a rod & reel, building a tacklebox

I used to fish a good bit when I was younger. Hadn't had time to go much, but am about start up again.
What's some of the basic/versatile equipment that one would suggest?
I'll be fishing mostly in south La.

What type of reel? Spinning, baitcast, or closed face?
fresh or saltwater?
fresh or saltwater?

I can use all three reels.
I'm less comfortable using baitcast, but that's because my experience with them is limited.
I'd like to do both, saltwater and freshwater.

My budget to start is probably ~$650 to start with.

I prefer baitcast but if youre more comfortable with spinning, get a spinning reel with stainless bearings so it doesn't get eaten up by salt.
I like all-star classic rods, $49 for a solid rod.
Eta: $650??? You should be able to get a good setup with that. Damn that would be a fun academy run.

Shimano citica and an allstar rod. Once you get comfortable with baitcast you wont want to go back. that'll run you $175ish.
There was a redfish tackle thread this morning. for specks i use single or double rig 1/4 jigheads with h&h plastics.
can't help you with freshwater.

I'll definitely check it out.
I'm pretty much starting from scratch.
I'd prefer to catch things like redfish and trout.

well fishing is all about comfort. You want to be comfortable out there. Just go to your local tackle store and talk shop. Get whats comfortable to you and a few baits to get you started for your targeted species.
Your standard medium action rod should work well enough for most any application in salt or fresh.
Some good starter baits:
Salt:
1/4 ounce lead heads
pack of sand eels
pack of sparkle beetles
pack of cacahoes
gold spoon
Fresh: (not too sure)
pack of worms
spinner bait
crank bait
All baits mentioned above are your basic throw out and reel em/work em in.

I could do a baitcast. I just want to fish some more with one to make sure I've got it down.
I'll check out the redfish tackle thread.
I appreciate the help very much guys.

What would be a good length rod to get?
Posted on 6/6/12 at 1:56 pm to Cecil D Diesel
i prefer a 5'9. 6-7 foot is standard usually.

I was watching some videos where the guy was talking highly of those she dogs.
In terms of lures, does color matter much?

you could do a lot of different things with a 7' medium or medium/heavy rod

I'd probably get a baitcast for most stuff, spinning for some saltwater stuff/fishing under a cork, and a small zebco 33 or zebco 11 combo for now for bream or sacalait.
DoIng any bass fishing?
For me personally I'd get a 7' MH/F baitcast rod and 7' M/M spinning rod.

I'll probably be doing a little bass fishing every now and then, but not too often.
I think I'm going to probably be around that 7' length.
Would I be able to get everything at Academy?

You should be able to. You may have to make a trip elsewhere for tackle though, academy's selection has been terrible lately.
