That's what's great about music though. EVERYONE has different taste and opinions.

Yeah, but the opinion that they created a musical movement is just wrong. The major labels created a musical movement. Nirvana was a damn solid band that hit the lottery and rode the wave.

Look, I have no problem with anyone including them in their top 5, but they were not the end all, be all of 90s rock. To further my point:

1. Which genre did Nirvana give birth to?

2. Which genre did Nirvana kill?

Nivana, Pearl Jam, and Smashing Pumpkins are 1,2, and 3. You can really put them in any order.

Although I'm not a big fan, but Matalica should be concidered. They really blew up in the 90s.

"Officially,"

1. Grunge

2. Hair bands, hair metal

Now, I understand that there were probably grunge bands beforehand, but mainstream (which I know alot of people hate and it's a sin to enjoy) wise, they were the band that were tabbed as the birth of grunge.

That was all a movement created by the record industry. Nirvana was just the lucky recipient of the first wave. Even Kurt recognized it, hence his endless self-loathing about being famous. Again, they were a good band, but they put on a pedestal and the idol worship was downright unnatural and fabricated, as it is with all huge artists.

Hell, your response even admits that they didn't originate or create the genre. They just got popular.

I'm sure Elvis wasn't the first to perform what he did, but he was the first to be recognized. It is what it is I guess.

To casty Tool is just dumb. You may not like them personally, but if you don't think Undertow and Aniema are rocking cds, well that's just crazy.

While the term “grunge” was a fancy bit of marketing by Sub Pop, the Seattle scene was not a media construct. Those bands existed almost entirely outside of the mainstream, developed their sound without much outside influence, and then burst onto the mainstream fully formed. Really, the only difference between Bleach and Nevermind are production values (and a far better drummer).

But what Nirvana did was essentially popularize punk rock. The indie scene bubbled up to the mainstream, through the cracking hole in the door they kicked in. Was it an accident it was Nirvana? Largely, yes. IMNSHO, it should have been Mudhoney. Others would say the Melvins. It could have been Screaming Trees. Or Seven Year Bitch. Or the Dwarves. But it wasn’t, it was Nirvana, so they get credit as the leading light for the Second Punk Revolution, because that reflects what actually happened. There’s probably an alternate reality where kids worship Mark Arm instead. In that reality. Mudhoney is the most important band of the scene.

And you really cannot understate the impact of Smells Like Teen Spirit. One day, hair metal was everywhere. The next, it was dead like disco. Deader, as disco has made a bit of a comeback. Glam died as a popular form of music in the span of about a year. It was amazing. The look and sound of mainstream rock changed virtually overnight.

The record labels co-opting the look and sound of Nirvana is the next wave. That’s the story of Bush and Creed.
